what does everyone use.  I have a POS poulan and it never did cut poor power and clutch.  Maybe I should look at older ones

I have a Stihl and love it.  It's a 290 (56cc) with 18 inch bar (comes with a 16 inch, but easy to upgrade for $10).  It has plenty of power, cuts anything I have used it on, including felling trees, or just trimming.

Stihl... Not really a question. Husqvarna makes a good saw but I would buy the Stihl without thinking twice.

Husqvarna.  I have a 350.  Great saw.  If you want some good comparisons, visit arboristsite.com, tons of info.

Husquavarna is a step above your Poulan, Homelite, McCuloch, etc...  However, doesn't hold a candle to the Stihl.  I haven't used the Echo's but I would guess they are as good as the Stihl.

Stihl 025 - this would be a huge step up from a Poulon.  I cut maybe 6 cords of wood a year and i'm very happy with mine.  It's about 8 years old and tuned it up one time since running synthetic 2 cycl oil mix.

If you want to go crazy and dominate the woods buy a Dolmar 510 with an aggresive chain.  Run about 5-600 bucks.  People that cut alot of wood can appreciate the speed of that saw.  It is pretty unreal.

It really depends on how much you’re using it.  If your cutting a lot of bigger trees or plan on using it quite often definitely invest in a Stihl, Husquavarna’s aren’t bad and if you can get a good deal on one then go for it but usually they run about as much as a Stihl.

Now I went with a craftsman…got it on sale at Sears with a hard case usually you can get a 16-18in for less than $150. I use it very little occasional yard clean up and mostly for fire wood once maybe twice a year…but I have used the Stihl line and they put my craftsman to shame.

Craftsman for personnal use, Stihl for work sites. Nite and day difference, but Craftsman will always do the job, just alittle slower.

i certainly can't disagree w/ the stihl lovers.  i bought my 029 farm boss in 91 or 92 w/ a cousin of mine.  we ran a tree cutting business together for about 2-3 years and then i did it by myself for another 2-3.  that thing has gone through hunreds of trees (including cutting stumps to ground level) and dozens of chains.  i've used it to cut a path in the ice about 12 feet wide by 100 feet long to get a sunk vehicle out in late january.  also used it to cut out an ice house once or twice.  have made the mistake of putting it away wet more than once.  and let it freeze after cutting ice at least once.  i've removed more than a few walls w/ nails inside w/ it too.  and i have never had to do anything to it other than sharpen blades and add gas and bar oil.  the thing is bullet proof.  hope when it comes time to buy another one that they are still making em like they used to.

Don't have a lot to compare to, but I recently picked up a husqvarna and I'm pleased with it. I just looked at all the reviews and comparisons online and there wasn't a bad thing said about it. Can't remember the specs right off the top of my head, but it's an 18" bar. I figure quality only hurts once!
The kill is the satisfying, indeed essential, conclusion to a successful hunt. But, I take no pleasure in the act itself. One does not hunt in order to kill, but kills in order to have hunted. Then why do I hunt? I hunt for the same reason my well-fed cat hunts...because I must, because it is in the blood, because I am the decendent of a thousand generations of hunters. I hunt because I am a hunter.- Finn Aagard

Thanks for the help I pickup a mcculloch 72 cc with a 18 inch bar. gave 100.00 maybe that was too much.  I asked the stihl to bring something out on Monday with an 18 inch bar  maybe I can trade.  He won't take a Poulan in trade.
The McCulloch is a brute 24 lbs. runs at 4500 compared to the high speed newer ones. I will see on Monday  Thanks

The Dolmar saws aren't on par with Stihl at all, in fact if you read the fine print on the label they are made in China. I've got a Stihl 038 Magnum along with an 019 for limbing and my back aches everytime I start thinking about how much wood I've cut with the 038.

For yardwork or light around the farm jobs damn near any saw will work with a sharp chain, when it comes to putting up a winters supply of firewood anyone who has done that for long knows a Stihl has no comparison.

I put up 5-6 cords and split the majority with the fiskers splitting ax  it is starting to get tougher when you crowd 60.  maybe that is why the kids can't keep up hunting.
One time a 20 some yr old asked if the old man needed a chair  I just looked and smiled after 4 hrs in the hills I told him I was sorry I forgot to bring the chair for him to rest on.
