Cats on the SAk

The boys and I have fished cats here in the fall during slow duck hunts.  We used some smelt cut into bite sized chunks and standard bottom rigs. Basically the same tactics we've used in the past for channels everywhere.  Of course there are other baits and ways of catching cats and they vary depending on what kind you are after.  The big Blue and Flatheads really prefer a live bait, Channels like a smaller cut bait or stink bait. In Texas we used trot lines with up to 50 hooks baited with shrimp, frogs, minnows, cut carp, cheese bait, and stinky blood bait, small sunfish (called perch in the south) and crawlers. But our favorite way was to use jug lines with small sunfish or shad at nite. There is something about chasing down a moving hylex jug in a kayak or canoe in the middle of the nite with headlamps that just gets the blood pumping.  We dont see any trot lines or jug lines used here so we have only used rods but the fishing has stil been good.  This spring we are planning on a trip from Trenton to Williston with the kayaks to try and find some bigger cats.  It's the Missouri there are some in there, perhaps as big as those on the Red, and its closer to the house.  We're in the planning stages now so maybe a few locals have some sections of the river down there they are willing to share info about.  Or at least places to avoid due to wicked currents or whirlpools.

4yaks. sticks here. I lived right along the Red River in Fargo. My son and I would fish behind the house often.  We would use Purchased catfish bait and did very good on blues and flatheads. So maybe its the available natural food that makes the differents.

Cats can provide some good entertainment when walleye fishing.   Like when your fishing buddy thinks he has the whopper eye only to see the 6-9lb cat surface.

4yaks,

People are truly missing a treat by ignoring the channel cat in the race.  Better fight than a wally and exceptional flavor out of that cold water.  I'd say you'd do fine with balled up crawlers or cut smelt.

Just curious because flatheads aren't  that prevalent in ND (I think only exist in the Missouri River system but not sure) and blue cats are nonexistent in the state. Channel cats are all over the place especially popular in the Red River.

I would be interested to know if there are flatheads in ND.  I went to the G&F website and they do not list flathead catfish in the state record list.

There are. I think they are few and far between but the state record was caught out of the Heart River and weighed damn near 30 pounds. I personally have never seen anything but a channel cat come out of North Dakota Water. It is listed in the ND fish records in the 2008-2010 proc. but flathead catfish are listed as non game species like carp and buffalo.

There are flatheads in the James River in SD so I don't see why they wouldn't be up the river in ND.  We caught them outside of Redfield SD.
