Didn't take long...

For immediate release
Dec. 6, 2011
North Dakota Game and Fish Department

Late Season on Mountain Lions Closes in Zone 1, Quota Filled
Mountain lion hunting during the late season in zone 1 is closed immediately. The fourth cat was taken Dec. 6, filling the zone’s late-season quota.

Zone 1 includes land south of ND Highway 1804 from the Montana border to the point where ND Highway 1804 lies directly across Lake Sakakawea from ND Highway 8, crossing Lake Sakakawea then south along ND Highway 8 to ND Highway 200, then west on ND Highway 200 to U.S. Highway 85, then south on U.S. Highway 85 to the South Dakota border.

The mountain lion season in zone 2, which is the rest of the state outside zone 1, has no quota and is open through March 31, 2012.

Snochic, the Federal and state officials like a healthy population of Cougars and Wolves.  They protect predators more than game animals.

Dang guy has cat number two.  Funny or ironic part about it is I was just talking about him last night in the Elite Archer bow shop.  A friend asked if he got one this year and I said no.  Then he goes an does this.  I'm not liking him anymore.  Jealous.

He said it was eating on a porcupine!  Not as many deer left so they have to eat critters that hardly give them any food in the belly!

Surprised there are even any porkys and raccoons left in the country.

Pretty crazy story.  Well, not really crazy just nuts I was kinda part of it.

Buddy sent me photo of an older looking cat track in the snow and then I get a phone call.  I couldn't answer because I was occupied with toilet paper in my hand.

I tried calling back but no answer.

Then I log into my email and see the NDGF release pop up and say all cats are dead.

I then send derogatory texts to the lucky s.o.b. and sure enough, he followed the very track he sent me by phone and poof, there it was.

Some guys have all the luck.

I wasn't posting that as far as game animals. Very SW ND has cats but by the time anyone see's them we don't have the option since the quota is filled .  I'm sure there are some that would disagree with this comment, as its just my opinion, but I would love to see zone 1 cut off at the Interstate and include south of the interstate in Zone 2. We have cats coming through from MT and up from SD but really don't have the option to fill late winter early spring since the quota is usually reached so fast , from the same area every year.

Sometimes I aim to please, but mostly I just shoot to kill !

sno,

If you have seen some or others in your neck of the woods have seen them it will probably only get worse.  The cats in my opinion are going to move further and further from the "hot spots" they have been found in the past few years.  They aren't going to find enough porcupines, rabbits and coons to live off of.  So they'll keep following the fringes of their "habitat."

That's my opinion anyway.

Tim,
We've always had cats around here. There was a big fire in the long pines in MT a few years back and then they really showed up.   Oilfield pumpers have seen them in the early hours. A lady I worked for 8 years ago had them screaming around her house during the summer. Antelope hunters set up in a ground blind by water.   They are here and have been here,  but just not much of a chance taking one.   What fair is it when 2 or 3 counties in the state fill zone 1 quota and we have to  go by their quota here. There isn't much for porcupines here anymore liked there used to be . Very noticable during deer season this year. Hunting 8 days I seen 1  porcupine.   I've voiced my opinion at the G&F area meetings but there's only so much this gal can do.

I knew what you meant. Still doesn't change my opinion on it.  Oh well, keep on keeping on. Guess I won't need to watch so close on  my way to work for them anymore.

Yeah this quota of 14 won't make a dent in their population.  3 adult females can get that population back in less than a year.  Definately going to get worse but more should go into Zone 2 giving others an opportunity to fill on a big kitty.  The lot by Home Depot in Bismarck is still vacant, maybe there will be a new one that moves in there

SnoXChic, Funny you mention the lack of porcupines.  I also noticed a complete lack of them this year.  Normally I run into quite a few while hunting around the pines but saw a single small one this year.  The other thing I thought odd was that two of the nights I sat I heard zero coyotes.  This was in areas where I would normally have heard at least three dens on any given sit.

In 4B my brother saw one porcuppine in six days of hunting.  That is four guys out in the hills with optics and laced boots.  I don't recall seeing a single one in the previous two years.

Back home at New Town we have a few.  I get to shoot them with the gun.  Cats don't like water so they aren't swimming across the lake very often evidently nor crossing the ice.  The last one that tried that was found frozen near the Casino.
