Case Cleaning

I haven't reloaded rifle ammo for about 20 years. I'm going to start loading .308 for deer hunting. Is case cleaning essential to accuracy? What works best for cleaning; I see chemical cleaners and abrasive tumblers. Don't want to waste my money, but I do want a good, reliable, and safe load.

I really dont think you have to spend a ton of money on a tumbler.  I do think though that having clean cases is important in running them through the case sizer and chambering them.  Now they dont have to shine like new just be free of tarnish and any corrosion.  Plus for me a shinny case is a thing of pride.  What i use is a Frankford Arsenal Quick-n-EZ case tumbler.  I just use he cracked wallnut shells and i put a few teaspoons of brasso brass pollish in with the wallnut shells.  I usually reload in 50 round batches and it handles 50 cases of 30-06 just fine.  let tumble for a few hours before starting the reloading process and they will look sweet.

I de-prime/re-size cases and the go right into the tumbler @ my feet to be cleaned.  I only tumble them for 10-20min, just enough to get the sizing goo off.  I don't need blindingly shiny cases, just clean as I can't like a gooey rifle and that's what gooey cases are gonna create.

Yep, sizing goo inside would be bad. Thanks

I use the Birchwood Casey case cleaner.  It's consentrated, so you mix it with hot water and let them soak for a few minutes.  I scrub them out with a brush and then dry them with a hair dryer.  I then polish them in my Cabelas tumber/vibrator with either corn cob or walnut media.

I've got mostly Federal Brass, Sierra 150gr sp and Speer 165gr sp and a couple boxes of CCI 200 and 250 primers. Now for the powder, any suggestions? Back when, I was loading 380 and getting a decent group, but was really touchy. I know things have evolved over the last 20 years

Do you do any sort of cleaning before running them through the die, or just lube em and go?

If the cases get wet/dirty, like I ran the bolt in a hurry and had to dig empties outta the snow or some such, and now they're gunked up, they'll get a spin in the corn prior to seeing the die.  Short of a really dirty case, no generally they get a liberal application of One Shot, a ride on the ram and then a dip in the spinning corn.

I run 155's and as such use a bit more powder and get a little compression.  I could see where 168's might offer a little space in the case and IME dead space detracts from ES/SD.  Just a thunk.

I loaded some 70 grain Nosler Ballistic tips for my .243 with 40 grains of Varget.  Took it out and shot them and hit one bullet right on top of the other at 100 yards.  I guess cleaning the cases does help.

I've got a bunch of Sierra 150 sp bullets but don't see any data at Alliance for them with the R 15, but there is for the Speer, can they be interchanged? The Speer is cookin over 2900.

Tired the 155's but could not get the velocity out of 18" tube i wanted.  I wondered if the not full cases were the culprit of my problems w th rl 15

Shiny cases are overrated.

Take your pic, all methods have pros and cons.

Media tumbling/vibrating doesnt get the inside clean at all and can work harden brass over time. Its also a pain in the ass to poke grit out of flash holes. Its also slow for real dirty brass.

Stainless steel tumbling gets the inside clean, but is expensive and DOES work harden brass thus shortening its life to a certain extent.

Ultrasonic cleaning doesnt get them "sparkly" but does clean both the inside and outside of the case. But than you have to deal with wet brass afterwards.

I dont "clean" brass often, but ive switched to ultrasonic cleaning when I do. Its faster than media, and easier on brass than stainless steel. Brass doesnt come out "shiny" but its clean and thats all that matters.

(You have to remember, to get "shiny" brass, you actually have to remove a microscopic layer of brass, this reduces brass life).
