It has been around for a couple years now, maybe 3?? I think it was mainly for the people nervous about mountain lions.

It has been in there for a yr or 2.  I think it all came about, with the increase of Mt. Lions in the badlands and some encounters by bowhunters with Mt. Lions.

I carried my .357 with me last year when I bow hunted.   Have to keep it in plain view, since I don't have a concealed weapons permit, nor do I plan on getting one.

I always carry my pistol when bow hunting.  Four years ago I got mugged on the way back from my stand.  That won't ever happen again!

If I remember correctly, I don't believe that you can carry a concealed weapon at all while "hunting."  Even while possessing a CWP.  The game warden wants to see what he/she is getting into before checking your papers...

I believe it is just the opposite.  You can carry a weapon, including a handgun, in the field and it is not considered concealed even if it's not visible.  Here's a section of the century code:

A firearm or dangerous weapon is not considered concealed if it is:
3. Carried in the field while lawfully engaged in hunting, trapping, or target shooting, whether visible or not;

I definitely wouldn't carry it from the field into a vehicle though.

Drayweb,
   You can carry a pistol concealed while afield hunting, permit or not as long as you are engaged in a legal hunt.  If you are done hunting and back to your pickup it would need to be unloaded in the vehicle.  62.1-04-01 (3).
    What I read about vehicles is a person would need to remove the mag and empty the chamber on a pistol for it to be considered unloaded in a vehicle.
   One of the reasons I have a permit is that I don't have to mess with the background check when buying a gun from a dealer.
     We have some of the most liberal gun laws in the country.  I don't consider it a hassle to have a CCW permit.  It is also handy for travel in other states where without one you can get in a heap of trouble.  You might not get into that much trouble for not having a permit if caught but if the judge also prohibits you from possession of firearms during a probation he might put you on, you can kiss the next hunting season good by.
