Frogs, Frogs and more Frogs.
Fished south of fargo this morning, and wow did they hit hard. Like Brad said, fast water out of holes and snags. Though did pickup a nice large one on the slack side of hole. Fished anywhere from 10 to 20 ft of water. Water is still high and Caution with logs floating. Had to cut anchor to keep front of boat from going under. We tried sucker and goldeye and not one tap. Sat in one hole and pulled 4 nice eaters out of it within 40 min. Stay safe and tight lines |

Fishing on the Red at GF is heating up. The water finally leveled off to only a slow drop and the fish are showing it. They are moving to the fast water around the holes and the snags. Bait of choice is sucker and frog. It seems they just don't have the taste for goldeye really. Stop in a spot and give it a good 20-30 minutes before leaving. When the fish hit there is no guess work. If the weather cooperates the fishing should only get better from here on out.

Went out scouting a bit south of fargo yesterday and the mosqitos were fierce. Got 3 cats in about a half hour, and probably a case of west nile. Lots of action on the inside corners as the high water and strong flows still affect the fish.

Anybody out there need any frozen goldeye or frozen frogs. I stocked up this spring, and with how high the river has been I have not fished the river nearly as often as I ussually do. I am in Fargo, but will be coming through Grand Forks sometime Friday afternoon. Any takers, its free.

Red is going back down so I took the family out. We used frogs and cut goldeye. Could not get a bite on the Goldeye but the frogs were hopping. My boys landing two nice fish on the photo page of 11 Lbs 2 oz and the other was 9 lbs 4 oz. Then some small fish as well. The frogs were so big that we had a hard time getting a hook in the fish. We misse about 10 fish. Fished slow water in right after corners and the fish were stacked in there. Only had about hour and half so it was a great night.

Catfishing on the Red River remains steady as the water falls from yet another high water spell. Fish are being caught off the main channel near the bank. Spots to check are shallow drop offs and cutbanks, snags, or grass flats. Don't be too concerned about depths as the fish are spread out and relating to the current more than how deep the water is. The best bait remains sucker, with goldeye showing some signs of life. Right now might not be a bad time to put some frog in the mix too. The river is falling but still high so be sure to exercise caution in boating and fishing. Safety is still key.
Another option to catfishing the high water on the Red is the Red Lake River. With much less current and flowing at near normal levels this can be a more relaxing option. The fish on the Red Lake are being caught in smaller mid-river holes as well as the edges of deeper holes on the bends. Bigger fish in the 13-16 pound range are showing up as well. Sucker and frog are good bait options for the Red Lake. Remember if you head over to the Red Lake River you will need your Minnesota fishing license and can only fish with one line. |
