River and Stream Systems Fishing Reports
Red River (North) - Wednesday, September 21, 2011
Catfishing on the Red this past week was tough. The quick drop in water temperature took its toll on active fish. This week was temperatures stabilize the bite is picking up. Fish are being caught in deeper holes with current moving into them, snags and tree piles that that are located in deeper water and deeper slack water. As the weather warms over the weekend start looking on the breaks and feeding areas again for more active fish.
There really is no bait preference so bring it all. Stay in spots a bit longer than normal to allow fish in the area to find the bait but don't forget stay on the move either There is not much left for the catfishing season so get out and take advantage of what we have left.. |

Wow, these fish seem to be getting bigger with each week that passes! Spent a lot of time on the river this weekend with some easy limits coming Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Even in the tough weather Saturday we got our fish, it was the slowest of the 3 days but we still managed 10 keepers pretty easy. Sunday's nicer weather seemed to really make the fish aggressive with our 2 man limit in a couple hours. Monday was a lot like Sunday with our 15 fish coming in just a few hours. Most of the fish came on crankbaits in the 8-12 foot range and a few coming on a jig and a minnow, with the bigger ones caught on cranks. Can't wait to see how the pro's do this week, there should be some impressive weights brought to the scale. Hope everyone can get out and support this event and good luck to everyone fishing in the FLW Championship!

Action is still good for Walleye and Sauger. I had to slow my presentation down quite a bit, and I eventually switched to a floating jig setup. Man, the pike are crazy right now, and the drum are starting to turn on as well. I hopped back and forth between the ND and MN side sandbars, and after little success I started fishing the downstream side of the sandbars, casting UPSTREAM towards them. First time I've ever experimented casting like that and I was rewarded. |

Put the boat in at the convent landing for what is the last open water trip of the season. time to switch gear and go hunting. Took the kids with me from 6:30 till 8:00. My daughter caught a 14 pound catfish and my boy caught a 11.5 pound catfish during that part of the trip. Then dropped the kids of with my wife at the ramp and picked up a couple buddies and stayed out ill 12:30 this morning. Activity while the sun was up actually was prety good but for some reason the fish were not hooking up. During this time we had some tremendous hits on our bait, some of the best I have had in a long time. Once the sun went down activity of large strikes slowed down considerably and we caught several smaller fish (under 10 pounds). We were using what I would consider to be large to medium sized frogs, and almost all of our strikes came from the deeper water in the main channel. We actualy did not catch any fish the whole evening on the rod closet to the bank at any spot we tried.

Jig-em-up Guide Service Red River Walleye Extravaganza has begun. Tyler, Jamie, and myself got to the ramp around 10:30am yesterday, after waiting for non-freezing temps, and started off in search of Catfish. A few missed fish, and a few hits but no takers, we move to a different location. Fishing in slack water, Jamie pulls out his personal best, a 19 lb 4 ounce beauty. After a couple more missed fish, and the water temp breaking 64 degrees, I make the call to switch gears and pursue my beloved Red River Walleye (and sauger |

Fished the North dam in Fargo last night. Had one rod for cats and one for eyes. Had several bites on the eye rod (lindy and minnow) but only landed one nice 15" sauger. At sunset I had something enormous literally pull my cat rod (big frog) off the holder and right into the river! When it was in the river, the foam handle was still up and it took off like a barrel attached to the back of Jaws. I threw a heavy spoon around for a while hoping to catch it, but no luck. Really wish I could've seen that fish. Was fishing in the slack water, so it was all fish pulling that rod in.

Red River (North) - Thursday, September 15, 2011
Catfishing on the Red has remained steady over the past week with numerous big fish being caught all up and down the river. They were being caught in faster water near deep water during the daylight hours and shallower fast water as nightfall set in. Frogs and suckers have been the bait but the fish are showing signs of preferring sucker. This recent cold snap has dropped the water temperature 8-10 degrees over the past couple days. It is yet to been seen what affect this will have on the catfish pattern. Places to try are deeper holes, snags, and of course keep working the fast water for the feeding cats. As the water temps level off over the next few days the bite will become more normal and predictable. All signs point to a continued great bite.

Missouri River (ND Lower Portion) - Tuesday, September 13, 2011
There is a pretty good bite going up and down the whole system right now, with walleyes getting caught from the tailrace all the way down to the stateline. I spent quite a bit of time south of Bismarck this past weekend with most of our fish coming on crankbaits, which is a big change from the jig bite we had going last week. All the fish we kept were in the 17-20 inch range with lots of smaller ones and a few pike mixed in, which keeps a person pretty busy. I'm sure a person could still get em on jigs but we decided to go with the cranks to cover some new water and see if we could find a few different spots. It will be interesting to see what happens this weekend with the Prairie Knights Casino tournament, should be some good weights brought in. Good luck to everyone fishing in the tournament.

Red River (North) - Saturday, September 10, 2011
Went to Drayton Saturday afternoon and started fishing a couple miles north of Hasting landing. Fished for about 2 hours and the fishing was slow, caught three fish. Came back in and set up the tent and had dinner before going back out at 8:30. Fished many area north from the dam all the way back to the landing till 3:30 am and the fishing became really hot. We only put four in the boat over 20 pounds, and I do not know how many fish we caught total. Most fish were in the 12 to 16 pound range, but we went through 40 frogs, 6 water dogs, and 6 small suckers (4"-6"). If I had to guess we probably caught at least forty fish total. As of Saturday night a person still could not put a boat in below the dam due to large amounts of sediment on the parking area (probably 12"-18"). It sounds like it will be cleaned off soon though, hastings landing is all clean though and looking good. I was pretty excited to get back on the river, with the water levels being so high in Fargo all summer it really put a damper on my catfishing this year.

Birthday Bash on the Red!
Started the evening off at about 7pm and got off the water around 10pm. It didn't take long to find the pattern and we were catching fish left and right! The first couple fish were smaller, in the 10-12 pound range, but after adjusting a few things the 20-24 pounders followed quickly. Redhorse sucker outproduced frog, goldeye, and white sucker EASILY. We camped out in front of a 20 foot hole, and had the best luck in slack water. 2 oz. and 3oz. weights, 8/0 Gamakatsu Octopus Circle hooks, and large steaks of Redhorse proved to be deadly. Just make sure to bring the CLEAR glasses, as the Mayflies are out in full force! Get out and enjoy the bite while it lasts, which should be the better part of 2 weeks I'm thinking. |
