River and Stream Systems Fishing Reports
Red River (North) - Tuesday, November 17, 2009 | |
I was out last night for about 1 1/2 hours. Mostly suager, after and at dusk. Large minnows on chartrues jigs with a chartruse and white swirl did the trick. No one walleye last night, just saugers, but larger sauger than average.
The bite was at the mouth of the drains and not in the drains as the water has dropped. Not sure if that will help. Yup...it is muddy when it is warm. I was happy to see the ground firm and the mud stiff from the cold last night...not as bad as earlier in the week for mud that way. |

this isn't a report, but I'm looking for a place to stay near the dam Tuesday night... Hopefully somewhere near Newtown. Anyone know of a hotel/resort nearby?

Well, I guess I could use more experience with the old RR of the North. I went down to try catch a big walleye from shore( I was trying to pull a Jig-em-up Josh or Backwater Eddy). I fished just north of Grand Forks where a drain enters the river. I had the guy at Home of Economy pick out some of the smaller sucker minnows they had (4-5 inchers). I proceeded to walk from my pickup to my spot while picking up massive amounts of MUD near the river and my english cocker picked up a record number of burrs in his ears and everywhere else. I fished for a little over an hour(4:15 to 5:30) with a lindy rig tipped with a smaller sucker and never even got a strike to brighten my evening. I worked the current, the slack water, deep, shallow and everything in between.............no luck. Just wondering if all you Red River Rats are still catching fish? I went home with my tail between my legs and an hour of pulling burrs off my dog. Still, it was nice to be outside with a line in the water. |

You'd think that with cooler weather, the fishing would be slowing down. But I've heard the opposite. Wading at the Heskett station seems to have been worthwhile this fall. I've caught at least one fish every time I've been out the past month or so (about once a week), and most mornings are good for 3 or 4. Several missed fish as well (can't quite figure that out, as I'm always using cranks with at least two treble hooks). Biggest fish this fall was 24". Chilly at 5:30 a.m., but worth it.

Fishing was good weather was better, Me and a friend fished in slack water and picked up 5 fish ranging from 20" to 24" plus lots of little snakes but all in all was a good day. Fish were caught using minnow and jig pitching and retreiving.

The walleye are back on the feed and frogs are again very high on the menue. Dusk and after with jigs and frogs have proved best for me. Some big fish around, and a mix of nice sauger.
Slow bumps and pauses along the muddy shallows is the key, in or near creeks and drains. Some action on large crankbaits as well. Large 5" or better shallow shads were the best producers for big walleye. Fish are hungry, weather is nice, get them while you can. Enjoy! |

Beautiful day!!! Scratched out a limit of walleyes, 16"-19". They were in great shape. Four males and one female.
Caught in 10 feet of water along current breaks on a chartreuse/green 1/4 oz. jig/crawler combo. Had to hit many spots and pick a few up at each location. Caught several other 12"-15" fish. It is good to see other year classes in the system. |

Headed down to Hazelton thinking with the deer opener there wouldn't be much pressure. Wrong. Looked like a tournament going on. Ran south first and picked up 5 little guys on jigs and lindys in 17-22 FOW. Ran north and hit a few spots where I caught fish last summer and 2 more. Ran further north yet and caught 3 more. Nothing big however. Everythng was released. Also caught a crap load of little northerns about 7 or 8 inches long. Great day to be on the water. 65 degrees on Nov. 6th. I love global warming!

Well the fish are still biting. Doesn't look like they'll stop either. Yesterday I got on the water at about 9:30, picked up gillgetter (you better not tell anybody about our little spot!) and threw anchor. The fish still aren't that aggressive, gillgetter picked up a couple small sauger, then I nailed a 15.5 inch sauger, we each lost 5 or 6 fish, and I eventually picked up the fattest, I repeat fattest 16.5 inch walleye I have seen in my life.
Gillgetter had to go to work, so I stayed on the river in the boat. I told myself I'd give it another 15 minutes, and pull the plug. I had a great hit 15 minutes later, missed the fish, and decided to go home 1 fish shy of my limit. I tried a few other spots on my way back to the ramp with limited success. One bite out of 3 spots, no fish. I cleaned the fish and checked the bellies as always, and it appears somebody else missed a hit! That walleye had a "twister tail" off of a grub in it's stomache, black with red flakes! Good luck guys. |

Went out fishing from the desert on Saturday, fishing was slow. Ended up catching only 3 walleyes, none big to keep though. Did have a nice walleye on but since I forgot my net in the garage we didn't get him in the boat. We did get into a lot of northerns size from 15" to a 4lber. Was fun pulling in the northerns, they were coming out of 3 to 5 feet of water. Good day, but got a little chilly toward the end. Didn't go hungry though we did get a rooster early that morning. |

Murp.
Yesterday I went out with some buddies on the river in my boat, probably one of the last times this year, ok the 2nd to last time. Fishing was ok. Nothing spectacular. I landed a 20 inch, 18 inch, and 17 inch eye, and also 2 nice fat sauger, one was 15.5 inches, the other was 16.5 inches. Again, many missed hits, and we lost several right at the boat. I found a stretch of river that has 4 sandbars within 75 yards or so, 2 of which are submerged, and we just hit those hard, we'd pick 2 or 3 up in 30-45 minutes, move to a different one, throw anchor, etc. The river is still on the rise, and we found the fish in 5 feet of water, shallower than usual the past couple weeks. |

Bigger walleye are on the prowl on the Red. I have been doing best with large crankbaits in whites and lighter color paterns after dark. Large may be up to 8" for cranks.
Another good producer is 5" swim shads on 3/8 oz jigs, in Black/White, Blue/White, and Pearl. Large slow moving swim shads draw hard hits. Keep close to shore on the first break in slow moving water, it will pay off....especially at dark and after. Sumo Walleye |

Fished at Heskett last Wednesday night with a buddy of mine. Ended up catching our limit, the last fish being a 27" 7lb 7oz walleye. Went back out this past weekend and limited out again. It is slow-going, but if you can be patient, the fish are nice sized, most between 17" and 20".

The fishing is still good. Fish are still responding well to a slowly retrieved jig. Sandbars, inlets, ROCKS, and timber are going to be your best bets right now. I had to re-stock my jig supply and treble hooks yesterday, for my home-made stinger rigs, due to pike, snags, and normal wear and tear on the line from rocks and logs.
1/4 ounce to 3/8 ounce SHORT SHANK jigs are the way to go. Make sure your arm, shoulder, and wrists are ready to go, lately I've been making maybe a half dozen to a dozen casts before I connect with a fish, and sometimes it's less/more, but you get what I'm saying. 15 minutes of no fish, and after that BE READY. The 20 inchers will let you know you have a bite, the 14-16 inch class don't want you to know they are nibbling on your bait. I took my nephew out yesterday, for 15 minutes (he is 5 years old, and couldn't stand the cold) and he missed 2 fish on a floating jig and 1/2 ounce egg sinker with a fathead hooked through the tail. I went back out after dropping him off with his mom, and caught the same fish that took his bait. How do I know? When I cleaned it, 2 fathead minnows were in the stomache, one with a puncture through the tail. Get out the ice fishing clothes, get out there and catch some fish. I guess one benefit of the longer shank jigs would be that the hook will bend when in a snag, allowing you to bend it back instead of breaking your line with the stronger, shorter shank jigs. Oh and one more thing, do your homework on "sauger", and you will find that they turn on 110% in BAD WEATHER, so "it's too cold out" or "it's snowing/raining" is NOT an excuse! ![]() |
