Cameras anyone?

Thinking of looking for a good quality digital with long lenses that might be fairly versatile, macros and telephoto, etc.  I have a quality 35mm SLR collecting dust for years  that's more outdated than the model T!
Wondering if there are any camera nerds out there and what they recommend.
Every time I think I need another gun that I'd use only a few months of the year, I think that instead I should get a good quality camera that can be used outdoors more year round.
Curious what people suggest.

Bobkat....I am also looking into a DSLR cameras at the time.  Don't really know what I am looking at!  I found some good deals on Wal-mart's website w/ nice lenses to go w/ the cameras.  Have my eye on a Nikon and a Cannon.  Having my Aunt looking into them because she knows quite a bit about cameras.  Let ya know if I find anything out about them.

Also, curious to hear what people on here have to say.

Thanks Frosty.   I have an outdated Nikon N70 with some lenses, and wonder if any of those lenses might be useful with a digital SLR camera.    Maybe have to go to a camera shop to find out.  Also do some more research on the web, although its not too clear what fits and what doesn't.
Sometimes easier to ask someone who knows what they are doing.

It depends on the mount of your lenses. You will probably be able to use them, but more than likely won't be able to use the auto focus feature because of the type of mount. As far as I know all the new Nikon cameras have the mount that uses a electronic connection to the lens to drive the auto focus where the old ones have post on the camera mount that mechanically controls the AF.  A great resource for all digital cameras is www.dpreview.com you can pick a few cameras that you are interested in and compare them side by side also get very good detailed reviews of most cameras available. The camera body is only as good as the glass that you attach to it. If you buy a $1500 camera and put a $50 dollar lens on it you are not going to get the quality photos that you want.

I sent ya an email Bob.
The kill is the satisfying, indeed essential, conclusion to a successful hunt. But, I take no pleasure in the act itself. One does not hunt in order to kill, but kills in order to have hunted. Then why do I hunt? I hunt for the same reason my well-fed cat hunts...because I must, because it is in the blood, because I am the decendent of a thousand generations of hunters. I hunt because I am a hunter.- Finn Aagard

I purchased the Canon T1i and am really enjoying it.  Amazon.com has been having deals on these cameras, and if you buy the camera and telephoto lens combo, there is a discount.  So the additional lens is almost free.  There are so many features on this camera, it does take some practice to get use to it.

My wife and I purchased the Nikon D5000 about a year ago, and love it. It takes HD video along with the 12MP stills. It came with the standard lens out to 55mm, purchased the extra 55-300mm lens, and recently purchased the 800mm lens.. Things with the camera are GREAT...

I know Nanky also has the D5000 and he enjoys his.

Bobkat...from what I have read online your old nikon lenses should work w/ a new DSLR.  But probably a great idea to talk w/ someone who knows for sure!

Right now I am leaning towards the Nikon D5000....good to hear the first hand likes on it!  Thanks

Where did you find the 800mm lens for the D5000? How well does that one work?

Hmmmm i guess it didn't like me posting off my phone, anyway i also have the d5000 and love it. currently i have the standard lens that comes with it but im looking for a new one. i definitely recommend the d5000, if you don't care about a couple of the different features and dont want to spend as much then id look at the d3000 also.

also if you don't want to spend a whole lot you could look into the older ones like the d40 or d60, most likely used but if they were properly taken care of.

i'd say go to a few different stores and hold them in your hand and see which one feels more comfortable to you. nikon and comparable canon models are so close that it really comes down to comfort.

on another note if you get the d5000 or d3000 the camera body itself doesn't have an auto focus motor, you have to get a lens that autofocuses on its own so that will make the lenses a tad more expensive. just something to keep in mind when shopping around.

WOW!   Thanks for all the adevice and recommendations, both on this post and p-emails.
I get the impression that my old lenses might work but the autofocus won't.  At least they might get me started and can add better lenses later on.   Like Fireangel says, a $50.00 lens would be the limiting factor, and I suspect the lenses I already have fall into the low priced range.   Maybe best to just start new.
Thanks for all the info, though.
