Buying a New Ice Auger

This has been talked about before, I know, but hear me out and let me know what you think.......

I only have a portable house, so I move around alot and drill quite a few holes.

Strikemaster honda

Pros:
- Much lighter than the propane jiffy
- has the bladder/baffle system so stop oil from leaking
- supposedly cuts holes faster with lazer blades over jiffy chipper blades

Cons:
- I am "told" that you are limited to an 8" auger due to power
- Lazer blades cut well until they easily can become dull or the pitch gets messed up

Jiffy propane

Pros:
-comes in a 10" auger for larger holes
-chipper blade suppposedly doesn't cut holes as fast but it is more relaible

Cons:
-Heavy
-Has to lay a certain way or oil can leak and potentially ruin the auger
-Some propane bottles work better than others
-Supposedly they are harder to start in extreme cold.......debatable

Questions.......

What are you experiences with the SM chipper blade systems?  Could I get away with putting a 8" chipper on the Honda, and would I want to?  Which is better......Lazer or Chipper Blades?  For my style of fishing, what is the best option for me???

Thanks

Where are you fishing most often? If you're on Sakakawea or other places that get lots of exposure to sediment, you'll want to stick with a chipper drill. I have a Strikemaster and I have both Lazer and chipper drills, and I try and get away with the Lazer drill wherever I can because it cuts like butter. I've only had the Lazer blades sharpened once in 2 years and I use it a lot. I have a spare set of blades that I haven't used yet also.

You can use a drill larger than 8" on the Honda Strikemaster. I know Ahab has tried a 10.25" chipper drill on his, he's commented on it before on this site. Seems to have plent of power.

I would recommend a Strikemaster. I don't care for the new Jiffy's because of the weight and also the stupid cable throttle system. I currently have a Strikemaster Lazer Pro that I've ran for 2 years, I have a 9" Lazer drill and an 8.25" chipper drill for it. I am very happy with the auger, it runs good and cuts like an animal. I've wowed a few guys with Jiffys when they see how quickly the Lazer blows through the ice, and with fewer revolutions.

Why does everyone have a hard-on for strikemasters?  Is it the brand name?  I don't get it, escpecialy for the price... go with an eskimo shark or the new ion.

You have a protable house so you can move easy, but how are you getting around? Do you use a vehicle, ATV, UTV, Snowmobile when you are on the ice (if conditions alow)?
If you don't always have to foot it across a body of water is the weight of the machine a big deal to you. I've held and used a Jiffy propane and I just don't see where the weight argument is, but that is also compared to my Jiffy Model 30.

i used a newer eskimo this last weekend and was very impressed with both the viper engine (surprisingly quiet) and the blades - seem like cross between shaver / chipper.

It appears that most people on this site have a hard on for the Jiffy Pro4, which is a heavy piece of junk in my eyes. I can't comment on the Eskimo or Ion as I haven't used either. I've heard lots of good things about the Ion.

I have a Strikemaster Lazer Pro 10" that I bought just under a year ago. Last weekend in Winnipeg it suddenly just stopped drilling and nothing I could do would get it to cut after that. The blades were sharp enough to cut my finger and had no dings whatsoever, but it simply wouldn't cut. Long story short, it was the notorious pitch problem. Luckily I knew someone going to minneapolis so I sent it along to be dropped off. They were able to fix it in minutes and reported that my pitch was off by 1/8". They also talked me in to new blades and happily charged $60 which I'm pretty sure is higher than retail. In addition they charged return shipping so my total bill was $75. Overall the service was performed promptly and satisfactorily but I feel a bit ripped off by the price tag, especially given the fact that it is still under warranty.

That being said, the performance of this auger is second to none and that experience, though irritating, is not enough to get me to switch to any other auger. It was my first lazer auger (always had Jiffy chippers in the past) and I may be to blame for pounding the blades on the ice when battling to drill through 4 ft of ice. I learned a lesson and from now on I will always carry a spare set of blades and a wrench to adjust the pitch on the ice if I have to.

As a side note; about 5 weeks ago I was fishing with someone in Winnipeg again and he had the Jiffy propane auger. It was about -20 farenheit and the thing didn't work until the last day of the trip when it finally warmed up to about -5+.

Also, it pays to shop around for Strikemasters, just like anything else in this world. I got mine on sale for $350 at this time of the year 2 years ago, regular price was $530. I sold my 10 year old Mag 3000 for $150 after that, so in the end I upgraded to a brand new auger for $200. Not a bad deal.

I had the Eskimo Z71 last year for half the season.  It was awesome, nothing to complain about.  More power than you need and super fast. A little heavy is all.  That's why this year I got an ion and really no complaints there either.  Just charge the battery before you go and it's good to go.  Not quite as fast as the eskimo, but the fact that it comes with an extension and is so light makes up for it.  Plus I heard that next year they will be selling the powerheads and augers seperatly and offering an 8" and 10" so I'm feeling pretty good about my investment.

All I know is my Jiffy is a walleye catching machine.  I wouldn't trade it for anything else.  It allows me to get into places that no other auger does.  Dependable, quiet and most importantly, it is fast.  This is crucial during a tournament.  It allows me more fishing time.  While those other augers are still trying to punch through, I already have walleyes on the ice.

Thanks for the comments so far.  I have the option of using an ATV or Sled for transportation, so carrying it accross the ice is a non-issue.  I live in SE ND now and fish MN more than anything.  I am from North Central ND so I do make it back and fish Audubon, Sak, or Darling, etc.

Pikeral Tamer........Since you have used the SM chipper blade, would you recommend overall??  I thinking about going the route you did, buying the SM honda with the Lazer blades included and also getting a chipper blade for it as well.  OR just buy the Honda powerhead and the chipper blade separate.  What would you do??

So Capt Ahab has run a 10" chipper on the Honda powerhead then??

Buy the chipper separate if you really want it, you'd only need to use it on Sak and Audubon by the sounds of it.

If you fish more in MN than anything, I'd just stick with the Lazer drill if you're planning on getting a Strikemaster.

1. Your auger catches fish for you?

2. How does your auger get into places others don't?

3. I have never seen anything faster than the Z71 (including your jiffy).

I'm not one to start shet but there were just too many things in that post I couldn't quite muster.  Also I'm betting the ion is quieter.

Kentucky- I just got a chipper 8" for my strikemaster and love it. I have a solo engine head. Blades went dull quickly on sak so bought chipper. Both cut like a champ. I actually think the chipper blade cuts faster than dual blade. My cousin just bought the new Eskimo but haven't tried it out yet. He hasn't even put gas in it yet. The blades on that are like a chipper/dual blade cross. I'm curious how long they will last on sak. Mine is 2.5hp and I believe his is a 3hp. I'm not a fan of jiffy cuz they are heavy and you gotta wear earplugs just to use one.

I love my jiffy just because it only runs when pushing the primer button or having the throttle wide open.  I also love the 50 lb weight.  Nothing like being winded after drilling 8 holes in row.  Someday a divorce is possible, but not this day.

If there was a viable option for charging the Ion battery off of an Pickup/ATV/UTV/Snowmobile alternator in ~30min and the batteries could be obtained for $30-50, I'd never haul another drop of gas for an auger, ever.

This moment is a paradox, it's the oldest you've ever been as well as the youngest you'll ever be.

Jiffy's always work better when there is a two man operation.  One running the primer bulb and the other guy with the auger and the throttle.

Bowhunter was right.  It was a joke.  Way over your head.  You have never seen anything faster than a Z71?  I am not an auger expert, but I am assuming you are talking about the Chevy Z71?  If thats the case, no more needs to be said!
