Broadhead?

Well gents/ladys bow hunting is right around the corner and im sure you've seen this question a bunch of different times but what type of broadheads do you prefer and why? I use Montec G5 fixed blades. I've always been curious about the different expandables that are on the market but have never used one. I guess i have trust issues with all the working elements.  What do you think?

Thunderheads, I've always gotten good true flight from them, and fast clean kills.

I've heard/read good things about the G5...I prefer a fixed 2 blade with a cutting tip (as opposed to a bullet tip) with or without a bleeder blade. I also sharpen my own since I still have a lifetime supply of old 145 grain Bear Razorheads that I can get razor sharp. Yeah, they are heavy but they fly well, mimic my field points, penetrate like the dickens, and leave a hole like a 30-06.

I have had good luck with Rage explandables (3 blade version).  But if you have been using fixed blades and like them I would just stick with them. I really don't see the point of a mechanical, since in a tuned bow they will shoot the same.

I carry both slick trick and rage expandable in my quiver when I go out. I use the slick trick when im sitting in my blind or stalking and the rage when i climb into the treestand. Both shoot as close to field tips as anything I have ever shot.

I like the G5 Montec and the Muzzy three blades a lot for fixed and the G5 Tekan flies awesome as an expandable.  Have had great success with all three.

sometimes there's satisfation in DIY--do it yourself.  take a good old  bear razorhead or zwickey  black diamond-- a stone and a file, and give it your personal best.  with a little work and patience, you'll have a strong, reliabe, deep-penatrating lethal point that's worked on dispatching anything that walks . spend a little time spinning them true and test shoot them on the range, then go out and tackle the world of bowhunting with the satisfaction of knowing you've got the head to do a good job, and YOU did the sharpening yourself!

Ive never used expandables but I went from G5's to slick tricks and I am very impressed. Of the 5 or so deer I have shot with the tricks, I think they have all fallen within 100 yards of the shot and they bleed like no ones business.

Do the Slick Tricks have a wider cutting range or just sharper/thinner blades than the Montec G5's.

Slicktricks have 1" or 1 1/8 cut (mag). They are a 4 blade head. I like them. I used to use Wasp Jachammers, an expandable head. Great kills until I hit one to far forward. Only penetrated a bit and then fell out. Could have happened with any head but I decided to go back to fixed.
Almost forgot, Slicks are replacement blade head. I usually sharpen them after a kill on my Lansky and use them again.

In the passed I used a 4 blade 100 grain Muzzy's. A few years ago I switched to Magnus 2 blade 100 grain Stingers and would not EVER shoot anything else. So very happy, plus you can resharpen if you have a good sharpener and they don't break the bank like some.

Good luck finding another broadhead as tuff as the montec. I've used them for 4 seasons now and have had good experiences. I've also shot a few animals w/ the tekan II. Last fall, I witnessed a friend take a bull elk at 30 yds w/ the tekan II which resulted in a complete pass through and a dead animal 100 yds. later. This year, I switched to the G5 Striker because it seems to keep its edge a little better, whereas the montec tends to dull a bit faster in the quiver.  I have had excellent arrow flight out of all three G5 broadheads. There are a ton of quality broadheads out there now to choose from, but after my experiences w/ G5 broadheads, you would have a difficult time getting me to change. Good luck w/ whatever you choose this fall.

I have been shooting spitfire heads for years, and have had no problems with them. Just find what works for you and stick with it.

Rage 2 blades.  They leave a hole bigger than my rifle and a very easy blood trail.  Have never had a problem with them.

I only shoot cut on contact fixed blade broadheads.  I have tried the Muzzys but i bent the blades on one of them in a block target so they went in the trash.  I really dont like the idea of mech. b-heads at all.  its just one more moving part to worry about.  Some of my favorites are the Magnus Snuffers and the Magnus buzzcuts.

Been shooting Slick Tricks for the last 3 years. I love the way they fly and they do the "trick" on a deer!

I'm thinking of trying the G5 Strikers later on in the year, but right now, with hunting season right around the corner, and my bow shooting ST's like bullets, I'll make the change after a kill or two.
The kill is the satisfying, indeed essential, conclusion to a successful hunt. But, I take no pleasure in the act itself. One does not hunt in order to kill, but kills in order to have hunted. Then why do I hunt? I hunt for the same reason my well-fed cat hunts...because I must, because it is in the blood, because I am the decendent of a thousand generations of hunters. I hunt because I am a hunter.- Finn Aagard

Thunderhead 125gr.  $35 for six and they fly true and kill as good as anything I've tried.

I have shot WASP expandables and always had good luck.  They really do fly just like your field tips.  I had one out last night and it fit right into my groups out to 50 yards.  Huge holes and good penetration.  Nice blood trails.  My deer last year it went through two ribs and passed right through the deer.

I just bought the G5 strikers and cut myself getting them out of the packaging.  You can shave hair easily with them.  They shoot well too!

Slick tricks for me too. Fly just like field tips and have left great blood trails and all pass throughs regardless of how much bone had to be chewed through. Blew through both shoulder blades on one deer like nobody's business. I do not shoot a super fast, top of the line bow, yet  my bow shoots them exactly like field tips with great penetration. I can't say the same for Muzzy's (not even close actually) or a few other heads I've tried. The replaceable blades on ST's are very nice. Once I kill a deer or two, I use the chipped up blades for practice and I save the blades that still look pretty good and then reuse them for turkeys. They're still plenty sharp enough to slice through them but dulled up just enough so the arrow stays in the bird rather than blowing all the way through. They don't run or fly far with an arrow shaft sticking out both sides. That saves time and money when I find my animals quick and can reuse the same blades on multiple kills. In three years now I have not had a single problem with them and they've put plenty of game on the ground.
