Brewer Lake - Saturday, January 6, 2007

Changes to 2006-2008 regulations indicate Brewer was dropped from the live bait restriction.

I did indead see several year classes of bluegill, but only one year class of crappie. (though I know there are larger, much older fish, but they're rare). Crappie spawns are inconsistant at best.
The G&F would do will to stock more of this poplar fish in the future. But its current agenda seems to be to stock walleye, even where they are ill suited.

Live bait that has been legally frozen and then unthawed is legal on all lakes. This is to ensure the reproductive organs can no longer produce.

I thought it was illegal to use live minnows on Brewer? Were the minnows dead? Did they change the law and I just don't know what I am talking about?

Though fish can be caught all day, from the regulars I talked to, Brew is a night bite lake. Fishing during the day is hit-and-miss.

If you're using just minnows for crappies and gills, you're missing out on a ton of bites. Downsize your presentation and catch more lookers.

From my first experience this year, it was obvious Brewer is in good shape with a number of year classes of crappie and bluegill present. We even stumbled into three different year classes of bass through the ice...weird!

Fished Brewer this afternoon and into evening.
Caught 1 nice 'gill and 1 small crappie on waxies (4.5 hours)
Missed a couple small ones,
the bites were so light the bobber was barely twitching.
21 feet, 3 feet off bottom. Fishing was slow all day acording to locals. Minnows produced one bite but missed. I have a feeling that the crappies and gills are hungry/big enough to hit minnows good.
Someone oughta talk to the g and f, and get more crappies stocked in there with a size limit.. let them grow up.
The fish are fast growing, with small bones, but.... not enough or big enough to make it worth while, for me atleast.

rygellner, If you go out of casselton heading north on highway 18 for about 10 miles you take a left and start heading west on county road 4 then go about 8 miles untill you hit county road 5, then take a right on that heading north in 3 miles you will hit a gravel road right before a railroad track, turn left there and in a mile turn right, and you will go through a dip and when you come up the other side of it take a left and you will be there.
