A guy might want to be careful on the Brew these days. The G&F posted this last week.

Anglers Cautioned as Reservoir Releases Planned

State, federal and local agencies will release up to five feet of water from several reservoirs in southeastern North Dakota to accommodate for anticipated high inflows in the Red and James river drainages.

Gene Van Eeckhout, southeast district fisheries supervisor for the North Dakota Game and Fish Department in Jamestown, said water levels are or will be drawn down at Lake Ashtabula, Lake LaMoure, Clausen Springs, Dead Colt Creek and Brewer Lake.

“Dissolved oxygen levels are adequate in all these reservoirs, so there should not be any concerns about fish winterkill,” Van Eeckhout said. “With the projected runoff, these water bodies should all be full after the spring runoff.”

Anglers fishing these reservoirs should be aware of weakened ice conditions due to the projected draw down.

Finally hit Brewer Sunday night.  My buddy and I caught almost 2 dozen gills.  Most were in that credit-card to 6 inch size.  We caught a few larger and they all went back.  The trail to get on the water was fine and I had no problem driving my pickup on the ice.

Just got back from attempting to get to Brewer.  The gravel road that heads to the lake was HORRIBLE to drive on once you turned north to head towards the lake.  On the curve I got stuck and spent 25 minutes digging and inching my way back to the highway.  Don't bother until someone plows out the road.  It sucks when you can see the lake but don't want to dig dig dig to get back out to go home.  All highways were snow packed but driveable.  Sigh.......

I was out New years day last year to Brewer. A buddy and I snowmobiled down to the lake only to find a Game Warden suck in the middle of that road about half of the way down to the lake access. We asked if he needed help and he said no, so we B.S. a little bit and we were on our way. During the discussion he said that the road to the lake isn't maintained by the county or the state. He says it takes for a local or someone on there own time to move the snow to access the lake. Its nice when its done, but thats part of the game.  I imagine sooner or later it will be cleared so it will be accessible.

Can't acces Brewer lake by vehicle.  The only way anyone will be fishing there at all this winter is if someone were to plow the entire road through the park and onto the ice, OR if you walk out on the ice.  Went out on Sat. to take perm. house out only to find that the park is plowed as far as the first shelter.  If no one gets to fish the lake this winter, the fish should be bigger on average next winter.

Fished Brewer for 6 hours Saturday. Fished 10-20 and many in between.

Just a few dinky perch. Marked what might have been suspended crappie or gills - but no takers.

COLD. Ice is 5-7 inches everywhere - and I drilled across a wide area (all the way across the middle and upper reaches).
