Ok guys, here is one for you. What age do you need to be to BOW HUNT in ND?
Here is what it says in the regs?.

Minimum Age ? The minimum age to purchase a youth deer, deer gun or muzzleloader license is 14 on opening day of the season. Anyone under age 15 afield with firearms must be under direct supervision of a parent, guardian, or adult authorized by their parent or guardian.

Nothing about bow hunting....

It also says there is a price difference depending on age??

License Fees
? Resident Deer Bow (16 years of age and older) - $20.00
? Resident Deer Bow (under 16 years of age at time of purchase) - $10.00

Bottom line, I can not find a minimum age for Deer Bow, any help????

I don't believe there is an age limit, just have to be able to pull back enough weight to send an arrow a minimum distance (120 yards?). I started when I was 11, but didn't stick one until I was 13.

I honestly don't think there is an age limit, just have to worry about draw weight restrictions.

I don't think that there is an age limit. I know that my cousin's son shot his first doe last year, and he was only 9. His photo was in the gallery.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I beleive there's only a 35lb draw weight restriction.

No limit on age for bow season (and in my opinion there shouldn't be for Youth Deer Season either). In fact I think if you read the regulations, they dropped the casting an arrow thing. I think the hunter simply has to be able to pull back 35 lbs.

I know of a kid who killed his first deer (small buck) in this state when he was 8 years old. His grandpa got it on film too. His grandpa is gone now, and I'm sure that young man will cherish that video the rest of his life.

As soon as my boys can demonstrate consistency and a willingness to hunt, I will have them out there!!! =o)

Thanks All,

Son is 11 and we are building his bow as we speak. He will be going through hunters safety soon and once he passes that and with alot of practice in general shooting this summer he should be well enough to hunt in a two person stand with me. Now if I can just get him close enough to a doe it will make for perfect.

By the way, if I'm not mistaken, he's not required (yet!)to have hunter's safety to bow hunt either. But it's good to get him into a class and get it out of the way.

Not required by law maybe.... but required by me. He has already brought this to my attention but it he wants to hunt, he will play by my rules, other rules include but are not limited to placing near perfect shots at 20 yds or less and all appropriate safety stuff. Thanks for the input though.

The ability of the archer sets the limit. That means the bow has to be so strong and so on like explained above.

Walynut,

I'm glad you have set those rules. Thankfully there are many like you out there, but we need more like you!

As much as I want my boys to hunt at the earliest age possible, I will not compromise on matters of safety and demonstrating effectiveness with equipment either!

My Dad was/is such a stickler on safety, and I am grateful for that. When I took hunter's safety, it was in large part a review of what my Dad had always taught me.

Good luck to you and your son!

Hunter Education isn't required UNTIL they reach the age of 12. They can't take the course before they are 11 years of age so it's a small window there.

Anyone under the age of 12 can legally purchase a hunting license and hunt without hunter education.

I'm with you Justin, they should also be able to hunt big game with firearms. It was close last year in the legislature and got shot down only because of blatant propoganda spread by people and sportsmans organizations who are ignorant to the facts and statistics seen in other states that allow it.

bowman,

You the gov of California or something in your day job?

Man, that's impressive that your son can draw the bow and even better that he will be afield with you this year.

I wish you and your boy the best of luck!

Now I'm bummed. Was going to flake out some bigger heads out of some agate I picked up, but not being metal I cant use them!? Wonder if that still applies to small game?

I doubt that would apply to small game but I don't know for sure. I wonder if some of us went to the G @ F and presented the 'flintknapping case' and demonstrated that home brew flintknapped arrows were as deadly as steel tipped ones in the circumstances that they would be used, (relatively short range and used responsibly, etc) if they would allow it?? No one wants a bunch of wounded deer, but used properly they should do the job just fine.

I'm no authority on bows, but 35 pounds at 28 inches draw? Wouldn't that make a smaller kid who could easily pull 35 pounds but who would have say a 26 or 25 inch draw illegal? I realize we are splitting hairs here.......
I suspect a game warden would probably measure pull but not care much about the actual draw length!?!

There really are two requirements. I know because I have a 9 and 12 year old. The first is being able to pull 35# @ 28". The second is if you are 12 or older, you must have hunter safety. Kind of stupid. If you are under 12, you do not need it. As odd as this sounds, it is correct because I have been on the phone with game and fish in regards to why the computer allows my 9 year olds birthdate w/out hunter safety, but not my 12 year old. If anyone can get my 12 year old certified in the very near future, let me know please.
