boat motor question

I've been having some starting issues the last couple times I've been out.  Its a 75 hp merc tiller.  Won't start right off the bat....crank, crank, crank...smells like its flooded.  Wait a minute or two, crank, crank...fires.  Once it starts it runs fine.  Got it home, took the cowling (spelling?) off and put the muffs on it.  While its idling, I push the key/ignition switch in like I'm choking it, and it makes no difference in how the engine runs.  When its not running, I push the key/ignition switch in to choke, and can't see or hear anything taking place.  I have no idea how the electric choke is supposed to work, but I'm wondering if it isn't messed up.

I did change plugs after it happened the first time.  The hand prime on the fuel line seems to pump up tight as well, so I'm quite sure its getting gas and spark.  I'm wondering if anyone else has had the same problem and knows the solution.  thanks

Definitely sounds like your choke quit working.  Normally, if you push the key in when the motor is warm, it will slow it way down and almost die.  If it is working it will make a clicking sound when the rod moves to flip the choke.  You can see it happen when the cowling is off also.  Look for any wires coming from your ignition to the electric choke and check connections.  That would be the first place I would start.  I have the same set up only a 60 hp.  Good luck.

Any idear on where the choke is located?  Since there are 3 carbs, is it located in the plastice intake manifold, or separately on each carb?

I'm nearly convinced that every piece of outdoor gear I own, with exception of my Bear recurve and badlands pack, is more trouble than its worth.

Or, possibly does the choke only engage when the starter is engaged?  Damn boats.

Google Mercury Parts, then use your serial number to find a parts diagram.  That'd be your best bet.

took the ignition switch out, and there was one wire broken on the back.  Put the two ends of it together, tried the choke, and wouldn't you know...I hear a click click click coming from the electric choke.  Bump the key and vroom vroom right away.

Thanks for the advice ahab...I kinda figured it was the culprit, but it was good to hear someone else agree before a guy starts tearing into it.

I am glad to see you are up and running again.  We still have lots of days that could be spent on the water.  I can't wait for another day consisting of a fishing and hunting combo.  Doing both in a day just makes a guy feel good.

Not up and running just yet...wire was broke too close to the switch to make a good splice.  Just put the ends together, and that was enough contact to get the choke to work properly.  Found a guy in town that will replace the whole switch and wiring harness....they come as one of course.  Hopefully it cures it...it should.  And yes, I look forward to some cold morning fall fishing up here on the west end of Sak, possibly the river if I get a chance in the next month or two.  Was out a few times this past weekend, and caught lots of white bass and northerns, one nice walleye.  I'm hoping the walleye get active....either that or learn how to clean white bass.

we caught a bunch of nice sized small mouth bass last weekend, they clean up easy and actually taste almost as good as walleyes.

If we're not supposed to eat animals, how come they're made out of meat?
