Bluegills

I am taking the family to a small lake near Walker, MN the end of next week. Doing a little research on the lake they say there is bluegills in it. I have never tried fishing for bluegills before. Is it somewhat similar to catching walleyes just smaller jigs. What kind of bait would work the best. R sunfish more likely to be in shallower water or not. I have no idea what to do when it comes to catching these fish. More or less wanting the kids to catch them more than me. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If everyone focused on the important things in life the world would have a shortage of fishing poles.

for bigger gills, slow trolling with spinners and small hooks, did that on big floyd lake north of detroit lakes and got a number of 7-8 inchers, but we caught 13 diferent fish there, even a few bowfin, they fight like American GI's during WWII, no comparison.

Caught a bunch today with an 1/8 oz jig and a little twister tail. Kids caught theirs with a little hook, pinch weight and a bobber tied to their toes!

Haha this is cute. Bluegills are all we fished for in Wisconsin so to hear that someone has never fished for them before is cute. Its super easy, way easier then walleye fishing.... a bobber, a worm, in the shallows. Give them about 2 min. and you will have a fish.

Your kids will have a blast, you too,its possible the gills will be on the beds still, water temps should be in the low 60's up there unless the lake is shallow in which case they'll be off the beds in deeper water,so a small weighted jig tippped with a chunk of worm and a small bobber is all ya need, work along the pads or pencil weeds if the lake has'em.
