Has anybody noticed any bluegill sitting on their nests?  I was at McDowell dam last week and didn't see any.  Just wondering when they will start to spawn.

Minnesota its about done with for bluegills and crappies.  It is all relevant to water temp, so I'm not sure in your area, but If I was a betting man, I'd say they have came up to their nests and have gone.  As well if conditions aren't right the spawn might not take place.  I believe I witnessed that in a lake in MN this year, it was strange.

I didn't know there was bluegills in McDowell, only thing I thought that was worth catching were some rainbows.

From past years, the bluegill typically spawn the last weeks of June.  McDowell does have a lot of bluegills.  Caught some nice ones last year so I'm hoping to catch even bigger ones this year.  I was thinking the water temps may be lower this year and have a delayed spawn.

Okay. Gotcha. You woudl be correct to say that with the cooler spring the spawn will be later.  I sight fish quite a bit and the fish spawning was about 2-3 weeks later from last year. That is a huge difference, so it could sure be the case for you.  In a typical spring around here I would say most panfish have dropped eggs and moved off their nests by the first of June. You might still have a shot up there!  What was the water temp, or didn't you get a reading?

I did a bit of searching on the GNF website.  They had an article about bluegill spawning in ND.  They said they typically spawn in mid to late June when the water temps are in the upper 60s.  I haven't checked the water temps.  Maybe I'll run out there tomorrow.  The reason I want to go is because I know there will finally be some nice ones out there.  We've had at least 3 years of higher water so there hasn't been any winter kill.

found spawning gills and crappie in casstleton res a few weeks ago, very agressive but very picky, they would take one size 10 with half a angle worm but would not take the same thing on another line at the same time, unreal.

Still eggs in the hen gills I'm catching in the sheyenne river and the bulls are still colored up nicely too.  I've no idea what the water temp is, but it's real cold when it goes in your boots......
