I've heard several first hand reports of dead whitetails in western ND.  Whats everyone seeing?

I say to hell with that pot o' gold.

I just spent 8 days walking around the Blacktail Cr, Mikes Cr, Little Mo, Elkhorn Ranch, etc, etc.  Saw a few whitetails, none of which were dead.  Did hear reports of some farther south though.

This year is the least amount of deer i have ever seen in central ND.  With all of the corn it doesn't surprise me that I don't see more, but my cameras don't lie.  A hunting buddy and I have 7 cameras out and we are seeing very low numbers of deer.  there are some nice bucks around but the overall numbers are horrible.

Elk.  We didn't see a ton of whitetail, but even near the water where a person should find WT in general and especiially those dead from EHD, we didn't see a dead deer.

But man alive, it's going to be a great year to have a muley buck tag in that area.  I saw a number of spectacular muley bucks. Numerically there weren't a tremendous number of deer but quality wise it was the best I've ever seen.

Saturday night I saw 1 doe and Sunday morning I saw 0 deer. I was overlooking ALOT of country. Granted it was a full moon and like a billion degrees.

Some hunting buddies hunt south of williston and last weekend they found 7 dead deer within a couple miles. Game warden came out and took the first buck but couldn't confirm blue tongue. Next day they went out and found the biggest buck dead, scored near 175. It's a tough year for it to come through, pretty sad stuff.

We need a good hard frost... and need it soon to stop  spreading to more deer. Sure doesnt look like a frost coming anytime soon though... a good one in the mid 20's or so. As long is there is warm weather, cattle and water, its going to stay around.

If it gets to 27-28 degrees for a few hours, it might be enough to kill it for the season out west, or at least put a damper on it for a week or two out there. (this coming from a g and f biologist I talked to the other night) ..... he also stated that if it only hits that 30-31 degree mark, it's usually not enough to kill it. Usually I don't pray for cold, but this one of those rare occasions where I am.

Just talked to a rancher near Watford City - dead deer all over the place.  This is really sad and the Game and Fish will NEVER figure it out. It has to be an outside source.

So the Game and Fish is supposed to be able to predict blue tongue outbreaks? Or what are you saying, it's something different thats killing these deer?

If we're not supposed to eat animals, how come they're made out of meat?

One of the biggest issues is much of the whitetail country along the Little Missouri River is privately owned and locked down hard.  I defend the private landowner but if they are complaining about a bunch of dead deer by disease it isn't the NDGF's fault.  It is theirs for not allowing people to come in and kill bucks or even does.

They get over populated down there pretty easy when conditions are right and they have been right for years.  Now mother nature kicks in and is down right cruel.

So if they are complaining then I don't have sympathy.  But if they don't care or at least understand the common sense aspect of not allowing hunting, then I say more power to them.  And if they let people hunt on a pretty decent clip then that's extra power to them.
