Bismarck Gun Range

Drove all the way down there yesterday only to find out it was closed for three days.  Would be nice if the Game and Fish would at least put something on their website or in the newspaper.  Talked to some guy on a mower who said he was mapping the area for the new gun  range.  Said it will face the east.  That should work good for the morning shooters with the sun in their eyes.

I knew they were going to start work on it yet this summer, but hadn't heard of it closing yet. So, all it takes is 3 days and the new range will be open?

No.  He's just mapping it out for now.

New mandan range is supposed to be pretty sweet. Hopefully they get with the program and add a 200 yard berm again...

East - I wonder if they will stretch it out to ?500 yards or something.  Plenty of room for a longer range that everyone is asking for if they face it East.  Probably get 1000 maybe.
Too far for my old eyes, but for the guys on this website who always shoot their 189 inch bucks on the dead run at 926 yards, it could be helpful!

I was down there today. Didnt look at the sign on my way to the ramp but there was a truck there and heard shooting.  So someone said the hell with the sign.

I totaly gave up on that range years ago due to the fact of having to deal with all the urban gorillias and unsafe shooters! and trash. I love to punch paper, but find it a bit hard to concentrate on a nice three shot group with a minivan load of urban gorillias at the bench next to you emptying their thirty round clips all at the same time at a old television set  twenty feet from the bench! just seen too many close calls!

Just talked to game and fish down at the Mandan range today they were putting in post on the road that got washed away. Checked out the new gun range set up and goes as follows as you enter the range. First range is for pistols, then 100 yard rifle range, 200 yard rifle range and then shotguns on the end. All areas are separated from each other. The first three (pistol and rifle) ranges have nice benches. Shotgun area is wide open with rocks in the front side so you can't drive into it. They said the Morton county is now in charge of it if I remember right. Basically for changing the boards out for pinning up targets. I will be down in that area tomorrow and take pictures. Nice big mounds of dirt also for erratic shooters like me

They did.

Is it impious to weigh goose music and art in the same scales? I think not, because the true hunter is merely a noncreative artist. Who painted the first picture on a bone in the caves of France? A hunter. Who alone in our modern life so thrills to the sight of living beauty that he will endure hunger and thirst and cold to feed his eye upon it? The hunter. Who wrote the great hunter's poem about the sheer wonder of the wind, the hail, and the snow, the stars, the lightnings, and the clouds, the lion, the deer, and the wild goat, the raven, the hawk, and the eagle, and above all the eulogy to the horse? Job, one of the great dramatic artists of all time. Poets sing and hunters scale the mountains primarily for one and the same reason--the thrill of beauty. Critics write and hunters outwit their game primarily for one and the same reason--to reduce that beauty to possession. The differences are largely matters of degree, consciousness, and that sly arbiter of the classification of human activities, language. If, then, we can live without goose music, we may as well do away with stars, or sunsets, or Iliads. But the point is we would be fools to do away with any of them.

Is Minot just not included in anything fun in this state ?  I know theres G&F ranges in bismarck Mandan Williston and I am sure a lot of other towns.  Minot has nothing.  unless you want to pay $100 to shoot at 100 yds, the other bad thing about Minot rifle and pistol club is, god forbid you bring someone who's not a member.
Got em!

They did.

Just be careful when using the mandan 200yd range. I've used it a few times now and just today I talked to the game and fish today about my concern. Anyways the shotgun range is a bad design in which it allows people to shoot over the 200 yard range, which then the bb's come down all over the 200yd range, especially down range. Lets just say I run to get my targets down there. I wouldn't doubt it will be changed very soon...

I would be surprised to see anything past 100 yards down there. Ever wonder why the 200 yard boards disappeared?

I'm guessing it was because some idiot was shooting at the 100 when someone went to check their target at the 200.

I have had barrels sweep me and remain pointed in my direction when I'm sitting at the bench - yes I moved and made it obvious I wasn't happy about it.

What would be awesome is if they would put some steel targets out to 500 yards. Then nobody would have to worry about getting shot... at least out on the range.

Ya we dont even have a public swimming pool. haha
Worse yet, you go on the river in town and get labeled a criminal.  It seems like Bismarck is run by people 30yrs younger than we have here in Minot.
Got em!

You can, but its not embraced like in bismarck, obviously not as nice or enjoyable of a river but still could provide recreation.  Many people have been stopped by police for canoeing through the golf course(souris valley) and stopped for being too close to a coffer dam.

This is way off topic sorry.
Got em!
