Big Gills

I am trying to complete a stringer mount of big gills, right now I have two 1 1/2lb'ers in the freezer right now. Here is my questions would you wait for some possible bigger fish or mount anything over a pound. I know for a fact the lake I've been fishing has gills that will push 2+ if I can find the SOB's. Just curious as to what everything thinks.

If you're willing to travel; a long freakn' ways, I can hook you up with bull gills all day. They're called muskie chow where I come from. Unless things have changed, they're an annoyance fish and can't be used for bait. You'd get some pure bluegill and a lot of pumkinseed.

I would wait until the season is over and then mount. That is what I am doing. I have a 14 inch crappie and I have it in the freezer. It is vaccum sealed so it sould last a while. I don't know, how long do they keep in a freezer.? Mine is vaccumed sealed.

The best way to keep your fish is to wrap it in a wet towel. This keeps the fins from drying out. Tip is from Wayne Zesby Taxidermest of Lakota, who is the best fish man around! (Amazing detail)

well all i can say is it depends on what you want. It sounds like it will be a pretty cool mount though. Hopefully you catch a few more thoug. good luck

I have a big perch that stayed in my freezer for over 4 years until I got another that went with it. It was wrapped in a wet cloth and turned out great. Another option for you is to choose a drift wood that allows the third fish to be easily attached when you get it.

by the way. i would try lake metigoshe unless thats where you are fishing. i have caught lots of big bluegills there on north lake in about 8' FOW. my biggest to date is a 1 lb. 15oz. but just thought this might help unless you already know.

Honkrslyr,

I actually fished Metigoshie when I went to college in Botsie. I do remember catching some very big gills, haven't been there since 99. Might be time for a return trip.

Svcmag,

How far of a trip are we talking? I've went a long ways to pull some hogs through the ice. Shoot me an email ahctark@hotmail.com

ya now they are really coming around since 99 when i was really getting into bluegill fishing in about 00-01 they were sort of small but now they are darn big and they continue stalking them so thats good. the same goes for the walleyes there to.

Big gills in ND, here are some lakes that can push the 2# mark..I am sure there are more but these are the ones I have fished.

Short Creek Dam
North Gate Dam (population not even close to what it used to be)
Odlunds Dam
Sheep Creek Dam
Metigoshe
Oahe Back Waters
Sweet Briar Dam
Kalina Dam
Frohlich Dam (not many gills, but they are large)
McKlusky canal chain
Brekken Homes

I have been catching some massive gills and pumkinseeds 9.5 - 11 inches..aproximetly 1400 miles from Bismarck on Honeyoe Lake south of Rochester New York. Big pumkinseeds are beautifull.

Valentine National Refuge in the sandhill region of Nebraska has the reputation for pigs but I was checking test netting results online and the fisheries are on a down cycle right now with low water levels. I think the same goes for the Ft Pierre grasslands dams.

Personally, I don't mount panfish under 2 pounds and I can tell you that the bluegill is the most difficult of the trinity: Perch/Gill/Crappie A legitamite 2# bluegill is a very rare catch anywhere where ice covers lakes.

I hope it helps some people find some gills. I literally spent 3 years chasing gills all over the state to find the best bluegill fishing. I am sure I forgot a few of the lakes, but these are some good ones.

Nygren Dam and Ralleigh Res used to be great for keeper sized gills, but last time I fished them that had changed and I couldn't find too many gills of size.

The best bluegill fishing I have ever encountered in ND was on a stock dam just west of Ft Yates. I believe the landowner was Becker. I am sure the water is virtually gone now, but back in 1996 it was unbeleivable.

I would definetly wait until you had a couple more. I am doing the same with my walleyes, all will be replicas though. I have 5 eyes that i have caught and want to get a stringer mount. They weigh 10, 10.5, 11.2, 11.6, and 13. Got 9.9 last year but dang it I dont want anything under 10. Had a 10-11 up to the boat two years agao but net man got buck fever and froze, then decided he wanted to keep big fish of the day and knocked it off. All fish have come from the same area, i think thats pretty cool to. Once ya get it done make sure you post a picture for all of us to turn green to. Rasta Rasta Rasta Hey

Buddha,

I started the same thing with crappies all over 16"s,needed 15 for a stringer limit, this started before the secret of monster crappies in URL started in 2001,made it to 9 then the size dropped.

~start the stringer now and just add to it,you could also hang a couple of big bass, pike and walleye to complete the grand slam.

Anyone in GF interested in taking an amature to hunt for big gills in February? New to the hardwater fishing the past 2 years and i know how hard those things fight. It sounds like a blast.

If there are bluegills in McKlusky canal, you can catch them through the ice on bread balls.

I still can't get over how you can get carp up here on crankbaits. Unfreakn'heardof. We used to mix up all sorts of "secret" formulas which were all real sweet and involved oatmeal. In fact, I've snacked on bait more than once. Sorry, off topic, maybe my Southern tip on breadballs will help.
