I have fished this stretch for many years. It's tight, shallow outside the channel, and at least it used to be loaded with deadheads, I hope they got cleaned out this summer. I use a 16 ft Lund angler deluxe, side console with a 60hp. I've hit several sand bars and never had problems getting it back in the water.  The down side is the wind will push you around a little. 40hp vs 60 hp depends on boat weight, either is good for that stretch.  I'm anxious to get back out there and see the new structure this flooding brought in.  Good luck with your purchase.

I purchased a lund alaskan 1600 tiller with a 60 horse mercury on it.  I love the boat for the river, i mainly fish from wilton north and new johns lake quite abit.  The boat has a really open floor plan and no carpet just vinyl so the sand and clay cleans out really easily.  I use it for bowfishing a lot also and for hunting ducks and geese on the big waters or on the river.  I've gone through some pretty sketchy areas with it and hit a few sandbars and deadheads with no problems yet.  just did 75 hour oil and gear lube change.

Lunds are good for the river. Get a tiller in the eighteen foot range so buddies can stand on back of boat and pitch jugs. Nice to have the width so everyone can be casting in good locations. Just my two cents and I an a fiberglass guy!

We have an 84 Lund Pro Angler 18 foot .... 50 hp Merc tiller. I think its the best all around river boat ever made. The extra 2 feet makes a hugeeee difference for room. We put all new carpet, air ride seats, full length enclosed rod lockers (they were in there), big livewell (also in there)....Did some checking and it was a "promo" boat out of Minnesota and one of the first ever built for that year, and went to a guide out of the parshall area, then down to hazen to a guy, and then we bought it from him....   and pretty much restored the entire boat ,and it has been working great on the river. The bad part, the 18 foot tillers seem to be hard to find. Alot of guys run the 16 footers and have great luck with them. If you get hung up on a sand bar, they are light enough that you can usually push them off !

If you are fishing by yourself or with 1-2 other adults, an aluminum hull with side console is tough to beat.  Anything 16-18 ft with 25-90 hp should be in the sweet spot.

I was just going to say that, you beat me to it swanny.  They also make a jet conversion for mercury outboards.

I own a 2009 Alumacraft 165 classic tiller w/50hp yamaha. This boat is my baby. I mainly fish the missouri river all over and love it. So, i'd say any boat in that range is best for the river. I do fish lake oahe and sak with no problem in 2ft chop. But there's no better boat for the river than a tiller. Easier getting turned around in tight spots. hope you find a nice river boat w/tiller.
