Devils Lake is full of northerns but I personally don't catch many over 8 lbs.  The Jamestown Reservoir and the Pipestem are really good places for big northerns.

Sakakawea hands down, and I have heard they have been bigger than average in audubon this year.

I don't know how far it would be for you but Moffit Creek has some monsters.  Was out there three weeks ago and saw a 17, 15 and 12 pounder pulled out in a few hours time.  Also many in the 5-10 pound range.  Guy that caught the 17 said earlier in the week he caught two over 20 on the same day.  The biggest we caught was 10 and was caught on the first cast.  I don't know how its been recently though.

If everyone focused on the important things in life the world would have a shortage of fishing poles.

casstleton res, caught a 30 and 31 incher this year, one on a 6 inch gold rebel, and the 31 incher on a size 10 short shank hook with half a angle worm while casting for panfish. up there they say that buffolo lodge lake has big northern in it, but I have never fished anywhere north of audobon or west of DL. the homme dam tailrace has some good northern and walleye in it, just watch out for snags and the ocasional line breaker, had one a couple summers ago break my 14 pound line, and I had a leader.

I would have sugested just to the left of the tailrace boatramp, but no acsess is allowed, caught a 12 pounder there once, and numerous 5 pounders depending on the day, other than that, don't know any good places around there to catch the ND state fish.
