What do you guys use for powder when loading for 223. Ball powder or cylindrical? I bought a can of W748 thought I would try that first. Never loaded 223 before, just looking for tips. I will be consulting my reloading manuals also. Just thought I could save a little leg work and narrow things down a bit. I will be loading mainly Vmax 50g.  I am also loading TTSX in 243 (80g) and 7mm Rem Mag(140g). Any ideas of good starting points on those and any results you guys have had with accuracy and such. I do have quite a bit of 4895 for the 243 and RL19 for the 7mag but would be willing to try something else.

WW748 is good as is H335, BLC (2), and Ramshot TAC.  TAC is the cleanest of the bunch and the way I'd roll if I were just starting out today.

R-19 is your huckelberry in both the 7 and the 243.  4895 isn't a bad choice in the 243 but '19 will fill the case better and probably give you a few more FPS.  IMO a full case is a happy case.  If for no other reason, you can't double charge a case that's full already, but IME full cases provide more consistant velocity and accuracy results.

Why yes indeed I can walk on water..............but I do stagger on alcohol.

Loading 50 grains in 223 I would also consider X-term. TAC really shines with heavier bullets, like 60 gr +, along with Varget.

I use H335. Don't know if it is the best, but it works well for me in both my Ruger M77 and my DPMS AR-15.

I Have used h335 and Varget. Varget and 50gr. VMaxes make one real little hole at 200 yds.

If it flies it dies!

I heard good things about the H335 also. I have never messed with the Varget or the TAC.  Always willing to learn though. Thats the great thing about this site and its members.

Varget works great but if you dont have an auto measurer you will need to trickle each throw to get exact weight. Tac and x-term are both ball powders and throw very accurately.

Benchmark is good also, and it throws better than varget. For 40-55 grain bullets in 223 I would use either X-term or benchmark.

Im probably the odd man out around here.
I run I 4198 or I 8208XBR.
The former I run 20 grains with a 55 HDY fmj and a cci 450. does 3/4 MOA
the latter is with 23 grains and a 68 Match HDY  with a cci 450. does .2 MOA

Cheap lil VTR Desert Recon 223 Rem with a Weaver tactial top end and a Bushnell Elite 3200 10X for the topping.

I'm the devil's son..... call me young gun.

I reload 120gr, and 140gr. ttsx's for my 7mm rem. mag.  Great accuracy using IMR 4831 for the 120's, and Retumbo for the 140's.  Have also used Varget for the 243 with good results.

Have you tried the new "Superformance" powder by Hodgdon?  I'm not sure if it's available in Bismarck yet.  It's suppose to be 100-200 fps faster than all the others.

I just checked the load data for Superformance.  There's nothing for the 223 yet.  They have 243 though.

Much prefer '15 to Varget.  It meters better and has produced lower ES/SD for me.

VARGET IS VERY ACCURATE BUT FRIEND AND I HAVE NOTICED A COLD WEATHER PROBLEM WITH IT IF YOU LEAVE A BOX OF SHELLS IN THE TRUCK A COUPLE OF 10 BELOW NIGHTS YOUR 1INCH GROUP TURNS TO 2 OR 3 AT 100  8208 HAS LOWER PRESSURE IN MANY OF THE SMALLER CASES WITH BETTER METTERING IN ALL CASES THIS IS A FAIRLY NEW POWDER AND IS A HECK OF A MATCH POWDER
