don't know much about bait but I do know that scouting, hard work, and practice end up with backstraps on the grill.....conditioned animals don't tickle my fancy.

If they do for you...enjoy

Not my cup of tea, nor will I ever bow to it.  (kraut in me coming through   )

Alot of these big deer are being shot over bait! I just can't get my self to do it! I personally wish they would make it illegal and get back to an even playing field for everybody! A friend just sent me a pic of a buck that should go around 180" It was shot over a cornpile over a fence from a refuge! Just doesn't seem right! I guess it's legal, but do you really think it's a moral way to hunt? Sorry! I know I'll upset some of you! It's just how I feel

sorry boys......didn't mean to rile everybody up.I personaly don't have the time to do tons of scouting due to ther obligations so I do bring some apples, corn etc out to my stand with me when I go.I appreciate A hunter that has the time to scout and put in the hard work but I just don't have the time being a weekend warrior. If that makes me less of a sportsman than I can accept that.I love the outdoors and hunting and I realize this thread would get some hunters wound up but I know there are alot of hunters like me who use bait so I will not feel bad for doing it.Its legal and I chose to do it,end of story

Not sure why you ask this question? You said you bring apples, corn, etc to your stand already.Really, baiting deer is a no-brainer.they will eat just about anything. You have to put it in the right spot and then once the deer find it.let them eat on it for a week or so.Then go sit there and shoot  your buck or doe and take your pictures!Years ago the best bait-was Jailbait

Heres what you do. Take a salt lick block and melt it down in a large stock pot. Take apples and acorns and put them in a large buckett. Pour the salt in the buckett cover with molasyses and comer dear. Its like a hot fudge sunday to a fat kid. They can't resist.

Take a 5 gallon bucket, fill it 3/4 with corn and then dump in a can of frozen apple juice concentrate, mix it up well and tada, deer mana from heaven!

A year round place to live with food, cover, and security.  Provide that and deer will be there forever.  Best "bait" I know of.

Ok I never thought baiting gave you a better chance because big bucks don't come into the bait until late at night.  Well my daughte has been hunting hard for her youth doe so I broke down and put out 50 pounds of corn.  The next even we had a surprise.  We have been seeing 4 different spike bucks and a few does that would not get into my range for her under 150 yards.  Well the spike came out then another spike to the corn.  Five minutes later a group of 8 nice shooter bucks came out into the corn. No does.  Just her luck.  Later in the evening away from the corn I finally let her shoot at a doe at 200 yards.  Perfect shot and she has her first doe without using the bait.... NOW Dad is going to put up my bow stand and shoot one of those bucks this weekend.  GO CORN!

Mad Dog, did she use the 223 or the 243?

She used her .243, Tikka T3, Nikkon Monarch 2.5-10, Harris Bipod.... Grandpa saw how good she was shooting w/ my .223 in the same setup and went to wholesale sports and came how with a new setup for her.  We set the trigger at 3lbs and she ran about 50 rounds through it two nights at the range.  Shot 10 milk jugs out of 12 shots (she pulled a couple) So I gave her a max range of 150yards, but after 4 nights and 2 mornings... I finally gave her the ok to let fly and she did not miss.  Top of the heart gone and it still ran 40 yards into the trees.

Outstanding!

Grandpa sounds like a good man.  I figured either one of those rounds would have bounced off.  She must have gotten lucky.......

Jiffy never have I stated either one would bounce off.  I had one of our friend shoot his with a 22-250 and hit it a little back in the liver and it took an hour to find it and the kid was a wreck.  Yes it killed it as did my daughters .243.  The only thing she did not like is the deer ran 40 yards (after a heart shot by the way)  Perfect shot.  She was asking why it ran away and all Dad's deer just fall over?  I said Dad shoot's a bigger gun.

My postion again is shoot the biggest gun you are able to and kill them on the spot.   Yes and gun will kill with a well placed round. And those of you who are prefect, even God like marksman should try to prove to everybody they can take a deer, elk or grizzly bear with the smallest gun possible just to show they can do it.

Eeeeeaaaasy there tex!  The "bullets bouncing off" thingy is kind of a joke on here.  (just in case you haven't noticed before)  Settle down there big shooter......

I'm happy your little girl had a good hunt.  Kudos to you for taking the time to show her hunting.  More people should do the same.  Congrats.

Now where are the pictures?
