ATV Winch Cables - Help!

When winding in a cable, I realize  its important not to let it backlash by keeping tension on it and all that.   When mine is on my snow blade, the darned thing will eventually  backlash even when I'm paying close attention to it and not paying out any more cable than is necessary to lower the blade.  Its tough constantly watching the darned thing  especially at night.   Then the thing jams up and it takes 1/2 hour of nasty words to get it straightened out again.

Has anyone tried one of these kevlar rope winch cables?    I asked them about it in the dealership and they said they didn't recommend them - more trouble than they are worth for several reasons.

Anyone have any other bright ideas?    Sometimes I think that shortening the cable might help, but we'd be left with the same backlash problem.

It seems to me that pretty well every winch I've owned for 50 years has worked better with a shortened cable.  Hard to get and keep the cable  tight on the drum.

Have you considered a bit heavier cable?  That would allow you to have the shorter cable and maybe the heavier cable wouldn't be as prone to backlash.

Having helped design a plow that uses a winch cable, the best method we have seen so far is to shorten the cable to two layers or see if you can find a tow strap to use instead.

My snobear plow  uses about a 2 in wide nylon strap. I would try an old seat or shoulder belt.

When I had my atv with a winch and snoplow, I changed it over to the same type strap that is used on my boat trailer. Worked great!

No no Horsager they said winches not wenches.

Seriously though, I have been using the synthetic rope for about six years.  I cut the edge on my plow mount a couple of times and shortened the 50 feet to about 40, so I bought a new 50 ft from Cabelas.  No wire in your hand, no backlash. I think the synthetic has it all over the steel cable.
I bought another cheap winch and put in my UTV box.  I put the old synthetic rope on that.  Now I have something to pull myself out backwards.

the blue Polaris synthetic run me $90 a few years ago.  The new identical except for orange synthetic from Cabela's came with a hook, and four feet of protective cover over the hook end for $49 this fall.

+1 on the synthetic.  my cable snapped a couple of times / winter, which meant i was doing repairs in the snow/cold.  havent had that problem in two years, since i put the rope on it.  they make a smaller length plow strap, havent tried that but if i plowed snow as a business or otherwise didn't need the 50', i'd put that on instead.

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I have an old strap around - will try it and then the synthetic if it doesn't do the job!

I also had luck with the synthetic.  It did wear through after lots of use, but I would just tie a new loop and put a clevis on the end to hook it up to the plow.  Its a lot easier than having to reclamp cable IMO

Ditto on the rope, changed over from the cable a couple years ago,no worries, besides the dang cable would always fray and bust when you were right in the middle of plowing

Interesting topic.  I haven't had problems with my cable.   I've pulled all of it out a few times and rewound it tight and it seems to do the trick.
