I have a 650 Outlander that I love but in the last few weeks it keeps over heating where it goes into limp home mode.  Any ideas where to start?

Is it overheating or triping the CVT belt?

It is getting so hot that it is boiling out the coolant.  I shut it off and I can hear it boiling.  I have done alot of mudding and driving through tall grass.  I will wash the radiator off tonight.

They have a plastic fan up front. You can see in there by looking in front of the tire if I remember correct. There could be mud stuck in there keeping the fan from spinning. This happens in the winter as well with melting snow causing ice buildup. Hope this helps.

Don't forget to check the fuse for the fan, or if the fan has gotten un plugged somehow. I an guessing it is a combination of idrty radiator and fan fuse blown.

Bet you it's your fuse.  A friends blew his radiator fan fuse went he went through some mud and water.  The coolant just boiled out, changed the fuse, problem solved.

Nope the fan is running just fine.  Spinning like crazy.  I am assuming I must have some grass or mud covering the Radiator.

If a good cleaning does not fix the problem check the thermostat. How old is the atv?

Thermostat not opening can cause that thing to take a quick leap towards the very warm side, even if the fan is kicking in, its not enough to keep the temp down if the thermostat isnt opening.

Wow... The cleaning fixed the problem.  I drove for about an hour last night hard and no problem.  It was full of little seeds from grass.  I was out helping chase down some cows and that did it.
Also What?? Buy a POO  ummm nope.  BRP builds the best ATV in the market.  Basically it gets rated number one every year.  I have two of them, 400 and a 650 and they are some unreal machines.  I used my 400 to pull out 3 800 Poo a couple years ago during the floods.  They are trying to open up the ditches.  I wenched them out and then went down the whole ditch and never got stuck once.  I also helped a guy with a cat once with the huge muddin tires open up a field that was flooded.. he went out on bought on the next day.  The Viscolock system is the best in the business.  Hands down.

There are lots of quad companies that build good machines.  Each machine has qualities that make it better than the one sitting beside it.  The outlander right now is the most powerful machine per cc on the market.  I live too far from a dealer that I feel comfortable doing the warranty work on one, so I drive a Honda.  I also had a 700 grizzly which would have been a great machine and was most days.  There again, the dealer in our area needed to do a simple repair under the warranty, and it took them a dozen tries to get to the root of the problem.   I no longer drive Yamaha's because I'm just done with that dealership.  Polaris...are way to heavy and load and...I don't like break downs.  haha  That's just my opinion on them.

Mad dog, I'm glad you got your quad workin.  Keep that radiator clean.  Those Can Ams are tempermental in that front end.

I hate to continue to hijack the thread but since the original poster figured the solution I will throw my opinion in.

6-7 years ago you could have criticized the Polaris ATV, but not anymore.  Even the top rated ATV enthusiasts who spend a heck of a lot more hours behind the newer quads will rank the Polaris and Can Am's at the top.

I won't go into a full novel on this but the reality is that the top of the line ATV's right now is Polaris and Can Am.  There are things the Cam Am does better than the Polaris and things the Polaris does better than the Cam Am.  there is a reason why Polaris stock hit over $120/share earlier this year when the others could barely clear $18/share (due in part of the success of the RZR and XP ATV models).

Honda had the top of the line years ago and still makes great ATV's.  Their reliability is still unmatched, however their performance for trail riding and pushing the limits in mud and water do not compare to the Polaris and Can Am. Honda did the same thing with their outboard motor.  Got ahead of the pack in earlier times but haven't kept up to demand of its users.

Arctic Cat needs to go back to the drawing board.  Suzuki, Kawasaki, and Yamaha are in the middle class.  All are great ATV's but still lack some of the smaller details that the Polaris and Cam Am's have above them.

Take a kid hunting instead of hunting for your kid.

First I am a Dad, then a husband, then a hunter.  Sometimes I get the husband and hunter mixed up, but luckily my wife remembers what order they should be in. :-)

I don't like polaris...but I agree with basically everything you said.  For me it's a "where can I get the best service in town".  In Minot, I trust Pure Honda.  I use to care about having the top performance machine, but now I'm happy having the one that never breaks down.
