ATTENTION ALL HUNTERS!!!!

Dad and i were drining around friday morning looking for a few pheasants to harvest with out rifles. and we were also scouting for bucks, dad has a muzzy buck tag.  while driving around we saw three different coyotes. all could of been shot.  we took a few shots at one to try to get one bb in him.  also that evening while bowhunting a different area of where we had seen the three others.  i had a pair of coyotes come out and got about 75 yards away behind some trees then they must of crossed my tracks and they headed back to where they came from.

so the point of this talk forum is to ask you other hunters to carry rifles while driving around. and please shoot a few coyotes. the fawns are taking a beating each year and the pheasant arent doing too good either.

I tried two sets on Thursday evening and one set on Friday.  So far, I am 0 for 3.  Either I'm doing something wrong or they were just calling tough those days.  Of course, it is only three sets, but I fully expected something to respond.  Hopefully I'll get out again this coming weekend.  I simply need more time too.

Good luck to all.  It can't hurt to kill a few yodel dogs.

Tough time of the year dakota to coax in coyote for a meal of rabbit, they are pretty well fed with all the dead and wounded deer laying around their areas. Not saying you will not have success, just giving you a reason they may not be interested.

A nice morning, coyotes running everywhere, full tank of gas, an AR with 3 twenty round clips,  and a monster energy drink , can of copenhagen = lots of fun.

That's a great point.  I'm sure they've had their share of venison in the last few weeks.  And then I go and give them a nice fresh gut pile from my muzzleloader doe this morning.  They should send me a Thank You card.  =o)

how is road hunting fun? anyone? 99% of road hunters do not have premission to shoot on either side of the road so i just dont understand the point of it... its against the law any way you look at it!

I am all about shooting every coyote I see, but I don't think they are as detrimental to the deer population as one may think.  coyotes are opportunistic feeders (just like most animals)  and I think it's alot safer and easier for a yote to stay in a 200 square foot area and pick off mice for a meal vs. trying to overpower a 200lb deer or even risk picking off a fawn.

Yes I know coyotes eat deer, but just one lone dog isn't dining on big game all by himself, and in the central part of the state I have never seen more than 2 together at a time.  although I am sure they can and do pack up here and go after deer, but I don't think its enough to really worry about.  In fact, I'd guess poaching and motor vehicle collisions do more damage than the coyotes do.

I looked at stomach contents research results for various studies in different states with different institutions (one study was on over 8,000 individuals) and found that only between 1 and 3% (depending on the season and location) of the coyotes diet was deer.  The rest was mice and other similar small mammals, carion (road kill) fruits, (wild plums crab apples etc.) bugs, snakes etc etc.  basically anything edible, other than deer.

I guess all I'm trying to say is, don't be so hard on yourself next time you forget the rifle.  You'll do more good and make more money turning in a poacher...way more money!

Where do you come up with that number. There coyotes, not deer. We are talking about dogs arent we. I have permission to kill as many dogs on 99% of the land that i know off. Very few landowners dont care how many, or how you kill them.  Just KILL. I love my drives when its not fit to be outside. Its alot of fun.

Last I checked road hunting is legal. If you have permission or the lands not posted you can fire away from a roadway.

I like to go out the evening before calling and use a coyote locator call, or a challenge, get them talking. If i get an answer, I hunt the area the next day. If not, I move until I get an answer. Much more productive stands that way.

you know my stance on road hunting - but come on - this is the only part of the sport that you can shoot animals (furbearer) from a stationary vehicle.  Go for it - shoot em all.  I seen one yote this weekend that I would of had a decent shot at.  No rifle along.

Stay thirsty my friends

i dont mean to be a jerk milti-species but coyotes defianately DO take the risk to kill fawns and it seems LONE HEALTHY COYOTES are verry bold and willing to go after fawns, dogs, cats, an i would be willing to bet that they wouldnt be overly aprehensive to take on a winter sick adult deer

So what's next, you planning on going to schools and try tell all the kindergarten kids there is no santa claus? You should know better than to cloud the issue with facts! Heck, one guy posted here last year and said he personally knows of a coyote den that had over 20 adult deer skeltons in it! (Shaking my head typing that)

On a totally unrelated subject, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.
