they have to send new phones because the current alltel phones don't have the same technology that AT&T will be using when they switch.  The problem is going to be that your new AT&T phone will not use the technology that the majority of the other companies use so the coverage will probably be very poor.  you have 30 days to switch carriers from what I understand, if you do not like the new service.  I'm guessing AT&T will loose 60% plus of their switchover customers.

North Dakota and I think 8 other states filed suit to keep Verizon from gaining a monopoly in their state. Alltel in ND was then purchased by AT&T

I hate change....especially when I have no say in what to expect: I was supposed to get my new At&t phone in Jan, than I heard Feb. Now I am hearing March: Our contract was up in May of last year, and we stuck with them: My wife wants a smart phone, and I just need a phone that works, also we have a 3rd line for my parents....I am really looking at switching to Verizon but have been waiting to get the new phones and give it a whirl.....I'm sick of waiting, and I have no idea when anything will change over.
I've been very happy with our alltel account so far, and almost 3 years of on-time payments, and 140 bucks a month, I just hope that whoever we switch to gives us the same quality service that we have come to expect!

My fear is that when I die my wife will sell my hunting and fishing gear for what I told her I paid for them!

For the past 5 months I've been running my alltel personal phone alongside my verizon work phone.  I've had my alltel phone service for close to ten years.  In western ND the verizon kicks it's but for coverage.

I dumped them when it went from Celluar One West to Alltel. Service and customer service fell off then. I jumped to Verizon and never looked back.

I dont know why cell phone's have to be so complicated. At&t are going to cut there throats since they wont be able to bounce off of other towers dont you think. It makes more sense to me that every cell phone should be able to use every tower.

What are you guys paying a month?  I like the "friends and family" as we can call each other for free: We have 3 phones with 1200 minutes split a month (we don't ever go over) 2 of the phones have 400 text plans (friends and family are free) We don't go over there either: Even though we all go through 1400 min. a month and the 2 text plans send 300-500 a month:
We pay right around 140 for the 3 phones: Looking at options, what should a guy be paying?  What kind of deals can we get with Verizon? Is Alltel "done"....than with this transaction?

I talked with one of the local Alltel reps here in
Dickinson.  He told me At&T knows they will
lose a lot of customers, but they do not consider
this state to be a "large customer base."  In
other words, they don't give a s$$t about this
state and they don't care if they lose business.
It makes no sense to me, but that's what I was
told.  My wife and I are on Alltel, but the day those
phones show up, I'm heading straight to Verizon.
I hear the coverage is much better and the customer
service is 10 times better.  I really don't care about
any kind of fancy phone, I don't even have mine
on most of the time.  I leave home to get away from
the phone, not to take the phone with me.  But I
know there are a lot of you that need them for your
business, etc and I understand why you would want
a pretty good phone.

Have you looked into the straight talk from Wal mart.  $45 for unlimited min and unlimited texting.  You do have to buy your phone.  Check it out at straighttalk.com.  No roaming can use it where ever you are going.

Greyrider, I was told thew same thing, several years ago. When I complained about, the poor internet conectaction AT&T provided in the country. The said AT&T would never up grade the old copper  line in our area ,because it was not cost effective. That is when I dumped AT&T and went totally Cell phone.I had Allet steal my old phone #.We have 4 phones  for about $180.00 a month.Cost about the same  as haveing A ground line and a 2 cell phone package.Works really well for us.I'm waiting to give AT&T a chance but I'm not thinking they are going to work out.Verizone here I come.

until my LG phone went down last fall I never had coverage problems with alltel because I could re-program my phone in about a minute, to take the strongest signal no matter who's tower it was.  When my phone went down I wasn't going to buy a new one because of the new phones coming with the AT&T deal.  So I took my kids old samsung phone in and had it set up temporarily.  Then I realized how crappy the coverage really was because I had my verizon work phone on alongside it.

ATT wanted the towers that Altel has in the state. While they may not worry about customer loss, they do care about customer service and the lack of service they can provide has hurt them greatly. Thus the reason why they wanted ND and the towers Altell has put up.

Couple things to remember, cell coverage has a lot to do with the phone, and less to do with the carrier many times. My  brother cannot call from the farm with his current phone, but we just got mom a new cell phone that does as do all of our other phones.

In talking and checking with people in the business, coverage should not change for people who currently have Altell unless the phone they chose is of poor signal gathering capability.

For people who do not travel outside of Fargo,Bismarck GF there are definitely better options that Verision and Altell or AT&T. But you will not have much luck in holding a signal if you travel off i-29 or 94!

I encourage people to stop and really think about phone use, phone type etc... Like our family, if you based your decision on the level of coverage my brother gets, with a poor reception phone compared to a Verizion phone in the same area you would get the false belief that Verizion was better when in reality if you have two identical phones with one on Altell and one on Verzsion and traveled with them. Altell currently has better tower support across the state and should as well when the change comes!

I'm going to try to explain this again.  There are two types of signals that cell phone companies use.  As I understand it right now 90% plus of all cell towers in the state are using the same type of signal.  AT&T has decided to go with the same signal they use in the rest of the country.  So they are in the process of switching their towers over to this type of signal.  I don't recall the technical terms for these signals off the top of my head.  Anyway, the phones only pick up one type of signal, not both.  Once AT&T switches the phones over to their new type of signal, you basically will only be able to get their towers.  So you will not have access to any other providers to roam off of.  AT&T could send both signals but apparently is choosing not to do this.  What their reasoning is for doing this is rather perplexing.  Now these new phones will probably work great outside of ND.  But for use in ND, you are going to have poor coverage to say the least.

My understanding was that AT&T needs to change out some of the equipment on the Alltel towers, but they forgot that the midwest gets snow in the winter time, so they are having some issues getting out to some locations.  That's the problem when these executive guys make decisions in the offices in the warmer climates, they just don't think very well.  So the last I heard was that the transfer will be more like the end of March or early April.  My guess is that the customer service side of things probably won't change much and we will have the same coverage as the old Alltel when its all said and done.  So when my new phones come in, we will just wait until we hear a more difinite date before we transfer and take our phones in to program them.

eye, you are right in regards to the tower change and signal, but you are forgetting that if they are not using both signals then Verizion will not be able to bounce off of the AT&T towers reducing their roaming ablity, espeically considering the level of tower ownership that Altell has in the state.

You assumed that most towers where non Altell owned, but from the Verizion dealer in the central part of the state, he is worried 80% of his current customers will not have any coverage once the change goes through!

It is the towers that AT&T wanted not the subscribers!

that's very possible.  But out west we have better coverage using Nemont towers.  So between the Nemont towers and Verizon towers it'll probably be very good coverage.  But I can't speak for the rest of the state.  So given what your saying sounds like AT&T is trying to stiff arm all the other companies into switching signals.  It's going to be interesting to say the least.  Sounds to me like it opens the door for dual signal technology in phones.

eye, I have friends with AT&T who travel up here, once they leave Fargo they have no signal until they get to Bismarck for the most part. Lots and lots of companies use AT&T and complain about this especially transport companies. One company my buddy works for has purchased another wireless chip for their computers in order to have coverage. He has said repeatedly that he will still need them for his travels in western ND and eastern MT!

But that once this is done, his need will be reduced greatly based on the data the company is getting from AT&T! I have not purchased a wireless card for my computer until I see what is going to take place.

I will go where I get the best coverage for the best rate plan. With 5 phones being used in the central to eastern half of the state, I am hoping we do not go back to the old spotty coverage we use to have.

Same thing with my dad.  He lives in minneapolis and when he comes up here he has no service.  They will switch all the old Alltel towers to that frequency let's say and they will have service as long as they can catch an alltel tower.  But in western ND, there are tons of shared towers and since the other towers won't have that signal it'll be disasterous for coverage.  Not sure how it'll go but something will have to give.  I'm guessing companies like Nemont will explode.  Or companies will have to have both types of phones to have decent coverage.

So far no issues other than if you hit the wrong thing on the phone its an automatic deduction off my account for $.02.  Hated giving up my motorola V3m phone an oldie but goody. $20 for a pantech phone on the go-phone program.

Verizon can still use alltels towers that they currently use for another two years as mandated by the FCC agreement. Straight talk is only a decent for single line customers who want crap phones and the coverage is not as good as verizon as they only use some of verizons network. Even verizons prepay is or at least was that way
