Have you looked into the straight talk from Wal mart.  $45 for unlimited min and unlimited texting.  You do have to buy your phone.  Check it out at straighttalk.com.  No roaming can use it where ever you are going.

Is that what you use? How was the service?

My girlfriend has it and the service is better than what I have, I have Alltel right now, at the end of my contract, I'm going with it.  I think they use version towers, that's what I heard.

Greyrider, I was told thew same thing, several years ago. When I complained about, the poor internet conectaction AT&T provided in the country. The said AT&T would never up grade the old copper  line in our area ,because it was not cost effective. That is when I dumped AT&T and went totally Cell phone.I had Allet steal my old phone #.We have 4 phones  for about $180.00 a month.Cost about the same  as haveing A ground line and a 2 cell phone package.Works really well for us.I'm waiting to give AT&T a chance but I'm not thinking they are going to work out.Verizone here I come.

until my LG phone went down last fall I never had coverage problems with alltel because I could re-program my phone in about a minute, to take the strongest signal no matter who's tower it was.  When my phone went down I wasn't going to buy a new one because of the new phones coming with the AT&T deal.  So I took my kids old samsung phone in and had it set up temporarily.  Then I realized how crappy the coverage really was because I had my verizon work phone on alongside it.

so say my contract isnt up for awhile yet but i have 30 days to switch over after they become AT&T or can i switch now to verison and not have to pay a fee. The other question i have is can i keep my same number or do i have to get a new one. There is way to many ppl that have my number and i would hate to try to get everyone updated to my new phone number,

I would def. look at Straight Talk.  They run on the Verizon network.  I have had mine now for 3 months, no contracts and as low as 30/ month.  I was on Verizon and was tired of their high bills.

I believe you have to wait till the change occurs then you have 30 days without any penalty to jump to another carrier.

ATT wanted the towers that Altel has in the state. While they may not worry about customer loss, they do care about customer service and the lack of service they can provide has hurt them greatly. Thus the reason why they wanted ND and the towers Altell has put up.

Couple things to remember, cell coverage has a lot to do with the phone, and less to do with the carrier many times. My  brother cannot call from the farm with his current phone, but we just got mom a new cell phone that does as do all of our other phones.

In talking and checking with people in the business, coverage should not change for people who currently have Altell unless the phone they chose is of poor signal gathering capability.

For people who do not travel outside of Fargo,Bismarck GF there are definitely better options that Verision and Altell or AT&T. But you will not have much luck in holding a signal if you travel off i-29 or 94!

I encourage people to stop and really think about phone use, phone type etc... Like our family, if you based your decision on the level of coverage my brother gets, with a poor reception phone compared to a Verizion phone in the same area you would get the false belief that Verizion was better when in reality if you have two identical phones with one on Altell and one on Verzsion and traveled with them. Altell currently has better tower support across the state and should as well when the change comes!
In my lifetime I have seen fence row to fence row farming and the return of CRP and game to the landscape. Now we face again the prosepect of fence row to fence row again! Sportsman are our own worst enemy in that we fail to look forward and focus to much on the now!

I thought all the phones pump out the same watts?  Or whatever it is that makes them get reception?

I'm going to try to explain this again.  There are two types of signals that cell phone companies use.  As I understand it right now 90% plus of all cell towers in the state are using the same type of signal.  AT&T has decided to go with the same signal they use in the rest of the country.  So they are in the process of switching their towers over to this type of signal.  I don't recall the technical terms for these signals off the top of my head.  Anyway, the phones only pick up one type of signal, not both.  Once AT&T switches the phones over to their new type of signal, you basically will only be able to get their towers.  So you will not have access to any other providers to roam off of.  AT&T could send both signals but apparently is choosing not to do this.  What their reasoning is for doing this is rather perplexing.  Now these new phones will probably work great outside of ND.  But for use in ND, you are going to have poor coverage to say the least.

My understanding was that AT&T needs to change out some of the equipment on the Alltel towers, but they forgot that the midwest gets snow in the winter time, so they are having some issues getting out to some locations.  That's the problem when these executive guys make decisions in the offices in the warmer climates, they just don't think very well.  So the last I heard was that the transfer will be more like the end of March or early April.  My guess is that the customer service side of things probably won't change much and we will have the same coverage as the old Alltel when its all said and done.  So when my new phones come in, we will just wait until we hear a more difinite date before we transfer and take our phones in to program them.

AT&T uses GSM technology and Verizon uses CDMA technology...
