Memorial Day Weekend Signals Season Opening of Chain of Lakes Recreation Area

Visitors to Chain of Lakes Recreation Area will find the recreation season in full swing this Memorial Day weekend with an increase in camping, fishing and boating activities. The recreation area, located north of Bismarck on State Highway 41, offers excellent recreation facilities without overcrowding.

Reclamation would like to remind people about the opportunity to enjoy the best that North Dakota has to offer at the Chain of Lakes Recreation Area. Many management changes occurred last year and were well received. Designated campsites, supplied fire rings, placement of garbage dumpsters, posting of rules and regulations and entering into a law enforcement agreement with the McLean County sheriff are just some of the improvements.

Further improvements planned for the near future will include additional vault toilets, a dump station and a fish cleaning station.

“With the expected increase in visitors, your help is requested to make this outdoor season a safe and enjoyable experience for all,” said Joseph Hall, Dakotas Area Office Chief of Resource Management. “Please follow the posted rules and regulations, stay on established roads and trails, dispose of garbage appropriately and have fun.”

Additionally, help is needed to continue to improve the facility. Efforts to provide trees in the area were dealt a set back. Several trees were vandalized this spring at New John’s boat ramp. “It is very disheartening to see the efforts to improve the area destroyed so easily,” said Hall. “Your vigilance will help us protect the resources for everybody.”
