First Ice Awaits

Chilly is the word I’m hearing when people comment on their morning setup while decoying geese or preparing for the first morning pheasant walk. No doubt, fall is upon us and as the leaves turn to their mid-October beauty, there’s something else lurking in many minds. Dare I say, when’s the lake gonna provide first ice?

North Dakota is a land of riches when the outdoors is the top topic. We have it all, and as the weather turns colder, we become an ice fishing destination for visitors and residents alike. Bismarck-Mandan offers excellent ice fishing opportunities and it is a bit surprising how many outdoorsmen bypass excellent panfish, trout, northern pike and, of course, walleye fishing, all within a leisurely drive from the accommodating cities aforementioned.

The best part of ice fishing the Bismarck-Mandan area is the ice access doesn’t require all the latest and greatest equipment. You can drive to small local lakes that offer superb opportunities. Or you can drive to the areas of backwater along the Mighty Missouri River, which is offering phenomenal walleye fishing. Point being, there’s opportunity for all who want to wet a line this ice season.

The weather is turning and before we know it anglers will be testing the ice. Take advantage of the recent wet years with fully stocked lakes, ripe for the pickings. While you’re at it, stay in comfort with all the great lodging and dining opportunities the Bismarck-Mandan area provides.
