im looking at picking up a used bow. i have been out of the archery game for quite some time. where the heck does a guy even start when it comes to arrows? there must be 10000 different kinds out there.

any advice on arrows and broadheads would be appreciated. just looking at getting a half dozen for now. they don't need to be anything fancy. just something to get me through this season.
Hold my beer while i land this walleye!!

If you havent shot for awile, just pick up a half dozen of Beman cheapies to get your form back.

IF you're just picking up the sport again this probably isn't pertinent right now but when you do  go hunting I'd stay away from Rage broadheads.  Even with a double lung shot there seemed to be little blood.  Although they do enough damage internally,  the entrance and exit seemed to only leave a slit which was mostly occluded by soft tissue.

As far as broadhead, honestly I've shot deer with K Mart broadheads. I'd go with something fixed, and cheap this first year.

Once again, I must disagree with you fish. The deer i've shot with rage leave bloodtrails that look like B-grade horror movies. You can follow them on a dead sprint.

Scheel's brand arrows, you can get a dozen for $60 bucks and GoldTip makes them (Hunter XT model GoldTips). Can't go wrong.

Forget previous posts and bring the bow into a pro shop and have the drawlength, cables, strings, nock, etc... checked and fitted to you! They will find the right spine, length, weight of arrow for you and broadhead. This way you will be set up and prepared  to do it the right way! Most shops have no charge for looking over and adjusting the bow as long as you buy the accessories through them! Doesn't pay to do a patch job or on the cheap and have an outfit that doesn't work or you have to replace the crap all next year! Just my two cents!!!

Before this gets too far Cat, regardless of what products anyone here endorses, archery shooting is all about confidence in my opinion. Thats why I said to pick up cheap stuff to gain your form back and build confidence. If you lose an arrow, you're only out a few bucks rather than $10+ an arrow. Once you're shooting like a champ again then pick up some quality stuff.

As far as broadheads go, again go with what your confident in and you may have to try a few different ones. Start the WalMart guys and work your way up. Deer do get lost with expandables but they also get lost with fixed blade and bullets even. The only difference is that when it happens with an expandle the broadhead gets blamed. Fixed blades and bullets, then its operator error. Overall, I can confidently say more deer have been lost after being shot with a fixed blade or a rifle than with an expandable. Good hunting. Hope this helps.

Tearbear is right though. Have your bow get a good safety check first.

meelosh In reference to the rage-Glad you had better luck.  I should have taken a pic I guess.  It just wasn't one incidence.  My friend also had the same result a week earlier, double  lung pass through and very little blood.  The head did deploy but left only a slit on exit.  I will not use them again as animal recovery in thick bush in both cases would have been difficult.  To each his own.

Rage broadheads can be great.  Or they can end up like this.  You decide whether you want to take that chance or not.
