Anyone running the Leupold CDS on their deer rifle?

I have decided that my Win 70 Classic ss 270 WSM is likely the last rifle I will ever need for 95% of my big game hunting and that the Federal Premium 140 Accubond load will do whatever I need it to.  It currently wears a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 and is sighted in for MPBR uising 2.75" rise - this combo is easily sub MOA and has shot .5 MOA on multiple occasions.  I am contemplating getting a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40 with the CDS dial made for this gun/load combo which reportedly will give me exact aiming out to around 650 yds.  That will take me beyond anything I will need with the possible exception of the occasional long range 'yote.

Does anyone here have field experience with the CDS system at extend ranges (250-450 yds)?  If so, how close do the trajectories match up to POA when dialing the CDS?  Does the system seem repeatable and go back to zero reliably at shorter ranges after dialing up and down.  Does the scope seem to hold zero?  I expect some dropoff in optical quality but am willing to trade it for surefire aiming at extended ranges.  My Conquest is actually overkill on optical quality in my opinion as you can only shoot so late and I do 99% of my looking with my binos anyway.  When the scope comes up its time to shoot and I am more concerned with reliable aiming points than counting points at that moment.

Please weigh in with your experience as I value your opinions.

The CDS works.  Pard runs the same rifle/caliber/load as I do in a 270Win and his rifle is capable of 1st shot hits @ 600yds, repeatably, I say that not because he's told me but because I've done it with his rifle.  The caveat is that it is a "known" load for both accuracy and velocity.  No guessing, no going by what some box says, it's measured velocity via chronograph on multiple days coupled with a double check of actually shooting @ distance to confirm measured velocity, bullet BC, and computed drop table.  In short, you will get out of the CDS, exactly what you put into it.  Good solid reliable data in, will result in a very accurate and repeatable CDS dial.  Conversely, garbage in will = garbage out.  A straight MOA turret is far less confining.

Kenton Industries will build you basically the same style of turret for your current Zeiss.  All of the same rules for data input apply.  Good data will render a good turret.  Garbage in will = garbage out.

Straight MOA turrets 'a la Leupold's M-1 still rule.

I am currently shooting a Tika Whitetail Hunter in a 300 win mag. I topped it with a Leupold vx-3 4.5-14 with the boone and crocket reticle. That reticle worked great for starting out, but it wasnt as accurate as i hoped. I sent the scope in 2 years ago and had custom turrets built to my load specifications. The elevation dial is engraved with your guns data, so all you have to do is turn the dial to your desired yardage. The windage dial can be custom engraved also, but I left that standard so i can make my own adjustments. I have found this system to be extremely accurate with a little practice.

I assume the Kenton version does not have a zero stop which I understand the CDS does.  I know Zeiss will make turrets as well but I haven't heard great reports about them.

I believe that's correct, no zero stop from Kenton.

Zeiss Turrets are exactly opposite from Leupold, Nightforce, Schmidt and Bender etc....   The CDS will limit you ability greatly.  No wind correction for one thing and no way to adjust for poi shifts that will happen because of elevation changes, environmental changes etc...

   600    11.75     4.00      2.00       -73.7    -25.5     13.1    1950    1097    -93.2    0.7451

The above is for a 130gr. .277 Hornady GMX traveling 3000fps.  The drop is 11.75moa a 10mph full value wind correction is 4moa or 24" at 600yds.  The 2moa is a target lead if the target is moving 1mph Vel. is 1950 at 600 and energy is 1097.  Flight time is .74sec.  Basically what I am saying is if you are serious about extending your ability, get one that adjusts both elevation and windage.  Even better is a side focus for parallax.
