looking at this boat for DL/Oahe, as well as Lake Michigan. Yamaha 4-stroke main and kicker. What do you like/dislike about these boats? Thanks

Don't think you pay taxes in ND if it's a personal sale. Buy it at a dealership and you will pay taxes. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong.

If you buy a boat from a private party you dont pay sales tax. Otherwise I think it is 6 or 6.5%. I cannot remember for sure. It has something to do with if the item has a title that determines on what you pay.

my dad owned a smokercraft 17 footer.  It was very cheaply made and didn't hold up worth a darn on sakakawea.  sold it and got a crestliner sport fish and it's been a great boat.  the ride of his smokercraft was terrible.  the 19' would be better for ride but still not comparable to a lund, crestliner, etc.

You are correct, private sale no tax. Buy from a dealer and pay state tax plus what ever the city you buy it from charges for tax. It is $36/ 3yrs to license it if it is under 25ft long

Were you specific to her as to of where you were getting the boat? Maybe she thought you were buying at a dealership? Could have been a rookie banker? Did the laws change? Damn you Obama! errr what?

Had a smokercraft in the past, now own a Lund. The smoker was a good river boat and not nearly the necessary ride for a big lake boat. Wetter than hell and rough riding. After a day on Sak I would have to go around the boat and pick up or tighten all the screws that came loose. Mine was a 16 ft boat with a 75 horse motor.

Spend a little more and get a better hull, or just spend the same and get an older and still better hull made by someone else. Just my 2 cents...

Without a dealership there'll be no one to collect the tax.  You won't get taxed by the private party & G&F won't tax you on your purchase either.  You will pay tax on a boat purchased from an out of state dealer as well.

Used car or motorcycle, even private sale, DOT will collect the tax when you have the title swapped or go in for tags for the license plate.

I'm with Allen, I'd rather own a fifteen year old lund than a five  year old Smokercraft

Go to walleyecentral.com, and do a little research on the specific boat you are looking for.  I guess in the last few years Smokercraft has came alongway.  My choice is Crestliner, Lund, and Alumacraft.  Just depends on how deep your pockets are.  Lots of good deals on holdovers right now.  Boat Show season is just starting, and deal are out there.  Also check the classifieds on walleye central for a good used boat.
