I and looking at purchasing a Remington 597 VTR .22LR with collapsible stock.  Does any one have one or familiar with shooting one?  Have they been dependable and clean operating?  Pros-cons?

I don't have one.  I wasn't sure what it was so I googled it.  I read a couple blog sites.  All I saw were negative comments about cycling problems, etc.  Sometimes that's all you get on some sites.  Still, I'd check around thoroughly based on what I read.

I had one of the 597's in 17 HMR that was recalled.  Never sent it in since i didn't like the deal they were offering.  Called to complain again and they told me they would rebarrel it to .22 mag for me so i'm going to try that.  I didn't have many issues with mine in 17 HMR as long as i kept it reasonably clean.  I still feel that the best semi auto .22lr is the ruger 10/22.  Its up to you but I had more problems with the 597 than I ever did with my 10/22.

I have a 10-22, but this one looks fun to play with.  I did see some jamming issues with cheaper ammo, the reports on web are both ways.  Some having no problems some having constant jamming.  One issue was performance in colder weather.  That is why I was wondering if any one up here shoots one.  Hate to live in ND and have a gun that does not shoot well in cold weather.  I have jamming problems with my 10-22 also but then it needs a good cleaning again...Too bad they can't make an auto that operates as well as a 870 shotgun.

I second the S&W, I see quite a few of them at the range, and all work well.  The only drawbak is they seem to be a little ammo picky.  Most don't like Winchester or cheap bulk ammo.  I have only seen one with an issue, and that was ammo related.

If it flies it dies!

I second that.  Had one. A complete piece of junk.  It cycled better after I bought a 30 round clip.  Then it only jammed every 4th shot.
