Another "Tire Recommendation" thread

Ok, I have a 2009 F250 in need of a new set of rubber.  I put a little under 20k a year on this pickup, about 5k pulling boat and/or camper, and maybe 5k a year are on gravel/scoria roads.  I've seen and taken notes over the years on the various tire threads on FBO, but here's another with my list of likely candidates.

In no particular order:

Toyo M-55 - Highly recommended as the tire of choice for western ND by a tire shop, no coincidence I am sure that a set of 4 will cost me $1,483.

Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10 - Also highly recommended, set of 4 runs about $1,380.

General Grabber AT2, set costs $1,104. Recommended by another tire shop but is a fairly new tire and not much history on it yet.

BF Goodrich AT Knock Out, set also costs $1,104.

Any thoughts on the short list above?

p.s. Size for the price quotes is LT 275/70-18

Put rf10s on my pickup and almost can't wait to burn them off. Went off a reccomendation from a guy and I am not impressed. Have 20k on them and they still look good but very poor overall traction in my opinion. Tires are on a 2005 chevy 1500 . I would reccomend looking into cooper discovers. My dad runs them and has excellent luck with them. Seem to have superb traction in any condition. I have heard great things about bfgs too, but I know what my next set will be and that's coopers.

I've been running the bfgs on my f250s. So far So good. I got about 45000 on the last set. I did replace them a little early but winter was coming on and wanted to replace them before the snow flew.

No problems on Scoria at all yet. Maybe i've just been lucky. Who knows. Not much for road noise. I like them on snow and ice. In mud the treads will plug up but usually a little extra gas will clean them out.

Very good advice right here.  And don't forget to read the reviews and compare with other tires.  I've ordered 5 or 6 sets of tires from discount tire for myself and my kids and have always been happy with everything.  And since I'm a conservative I have a buddy that mounts and balances for a box of beer.  How's that for capitalism at it's finest?

Check out this place, have run several sets of tires with them.  All have performed great.  I have a '96 F250 diesel and pull some good loads and lots of driving on gravel and they have held up well.  It's wearing the Warden's.

Yeah, it's kind of like that.

I had a set of Hankook MT's and they sucked.  They were great outta the gate but @ 20K there were 2 that would no longer balance and at yr 2 they were weather checking terribly on a truck that sits in the garage most days.

Forget about Goodyear Duratracs on that heavy bugger as well.  They're great on a 1/2 ton but on a heavier truck they're downright squirrly.

Pard has an '04 F-250 and likes Geolandars pretty good.

I'm running BFG AT KO's and so far, so good but I've only put 7-10K on them so another winter will tell me more.

cant drink all day unless you start in the morning.

Hi Allen:  Hankook Dynapro ATM RF10 is what I have on my Tundra.  Hands down best tire I have ever had a vehicle.  I research tires to death and this was the best one when it came to other customer reviews.

The Grabber and Bridgestone Dueler Revo  was on the list as well but I was told multiple times they tend to throw gravel really bad and said unless you rhino-line the bottom 1/4 of your truck then don't get them.

where are you located allen?  i just put on the hankook dynapro in10 ply on my f350, my dads are still in very good shape at 2years old. always pulling on gravel/scoria. i just got the girlfriend bfg all terranes at sears cheaper then anyplace in minot. 10ply for 975. tires plus wanted 1230 for 6ply.also check sears website they had good deals on bfg. they hold up extremely well on gravel. as for buying them online shipped to your house make sure you can get someone to mount them. alot of places dont like to mount tires you bought somewhere else. the extra cost might not be worth it

Go to Tyre Mart and get some wild countrys. I am on my 2nd set in my life and I just put a set on my truck a couple of weeks ago. They are a great set IMHO.

I just got a new set of Goodyear's for my truck.  I SOOOOOOOO wanted the Goodyear Wrangler Duratrack, but they didn't have my size.  The closest one was an inch larger and would rub too much.  I ended up getting the Wrangler Silent Armor.  My last vehicle had those on and they worked real well on the ice even after they were worn down quite a bit.  But I have friends who guide and put on a lot of miles on highway, gravel roads, and on the ice and snow.  They all love the Duratrack.  I've tried the Toyo's, Bridgestone Duelers, and Firestone tires but while they're great in mud and snow when they're new, once they get half way worn they SUCK!  The guys who have the Hankook's really like them too, but I haven't tried them yet.

I ran the Goodyear wrangler duratracks on my last two F-250's and I am completely satisfied with them, good all around traction in anything and they hold up well.  I drive a lot of scoria and gravel and have not had any problems with them.

Thanks for all the offers on tires their gents, I am in the Bismarck area and was hoping to shop local.

One thing about getting tires from the internet or a shop in another town that puts me on pause is the rotation and balance.  Most places give you free lifetime rotate and balance when you buy tires from them.  With recommended rotation by most manufacturers being 5k - 7.5k, having to pay to get the tires rebalanced and rotated would eat up a lot of my savings over the years IF I were to ever get 40k plus out of a set (hopeful, but not betting on it!).

I see the high price of the Toyo tires must have kept everyone else from getting them.  They were recommended as the fleet tire of choice for several oilfield firms out west and NDGF vehicles running the badlands.

From the "for what it's worth dept", I am kinda leaning towards the Hankooks because I can get them through the local Ford dealership.  They will price match the lower price of NW Tire, AND I can get the tires rotated/balanced for free when I get the oil change.  Yeah, I am still letting Ford do the routine maintenance.  I am a lazy bum when it comes to vehicle maintenance records, hence I do it all at Eide so they have a record of maintenance for warranty purposes.

I had seen a commercial for the Ford dealership where they said they would price match. I almost think they said they would also take an additional $100 off but I might have heard that wrong. No doubt free rotation and balancing is a big plus over the life of the tire "just did it myself".
I think your on the right track going there for sure!

Its crazy how much tires go up in price from my older 16" on my F250 to your 18", its an easy $100 per tire"couldn't imagine having to buy a set for 20-22" wheels .

Heck I ordered brand new wheels and tires from Dicount Tire mounted and balanced and shipped to my house for under a grand! And that was with their anything happens to them till their bald we'll send you a new one warranty and brand new locking Gorilla lug nuts came with them as well.
I wasn't even thinking of getting wheels but their package price discounts were just to good to pass up lol!
I went with the 10 ply Geolander ATS, not the most expensive by a long shot "$148" but they do get great reviews and have been good so far but time will tell. It was between them and the Hankook RF 10, it's amazing how many trucks have those Hankooks on now days! If moneys no object I hear those Revos are as good a tire as there is out there.

We have always had real good luck with Firestone's.  We have the Transforce AT's on a 2008 F350, and a set on a 2011 F350.  These tires bacially replaced the Steeltex tires.  Wish they still made those!!  They have been good for about 40 - 50,000 miles if you rotate them often.  I usually try to rotate them every oil change or every other oil change depending on the wear. I change oil every 5 - 6000 miles.  Actually, we just replaced the set on the 2011 and that truck has 56,000 on it, and they were put on from new at the dealership.  The 2011 is driven a lot of highway miles though...  Just my two cents!!

BTW -  they are a little bit spendy for the 18" tire that go on these trucks.  I think it was $1100 to put them on for four tires...
