Red Ryder BB gun....don't shoot your eye out

This is a good topic.  I have a 5 and 7 year old, and have heard too many stories about lost eyes with a BB gun.  From what I've researched, the Airsofts have much less FPS than a BB gun, but not sure about Red Ryder.  I've also seen prices from next to nothing on the Airsofts to over $100.  I think I'll go with an Airsoft, but not the expensive one. 

if you want airsoft INFO go to www.airsplat.com i however would NOT buy from this site because a few friends had terrible cutomer service after money was taken out of there acct and the product was not shipped. we ar avid airsoft players and use www.evike.com for our suplies. i have a G&G m4 carbine. it is an exact replica of my bushmaster but is significantly lighter because i wouldnt fork over the extra cash to buy the ALL aluminum one. i also went to scheels and pickes a sig sauer replica up for 20bux and my 5 yearold ocusin is able to opperate it easily and we have been working on gun safety and range ediquet. great learning tools however still somewhat dangerous.                           good luck

Get red ryders for both,  they will help them learn responsibility.    imho they should be graduating to more high powered air rifles at this age.   

Most air soft guns have labeling on the package that tell how fast they shoot and what level of accuracy. Make sure you get one that has the highest level of accuracy AND speed....the slower ones (less than 200-250 fps) have difficulty with any accuracy beyond 10'. The fast ones are around 300 or more fps, which will match a red ryder in speed...the safety factor of the air soft is that they tend to bounce off an eye rather than puncture it (maybe not  a direct hit to the cornea!) due to the larger diameter projectile with less mass than a BB or pellet. The machine guns are fun but prone to premature failure, and are less powerful and less accurate, unless you pay for a good one. Many of the cheapos have crap for sights as well. My son has gone through 5 airsoft pistols, rifles and machine guns....around $40 will get a reasonable single shot rifle. The airsofts are really nice for in-house use, but a more accurate BB gun can also be safely used indoors with proper backstops (cardboard box with a couple towels in it).
