I have a female Wirehair and this is her second season. Last fall she was not gunshy at all. I have not shot 12 guage much around her since last season but have often shot .22 while working with her. First time out this fall we didn't find any birds on a 3 mile walk and she became discouraged. Second time out we got on birds but the buddies dog boosted them40 yds to our left and at his gunshots my dog sat down and became very timid from there on out she no longer wanted to hunt. Any thoughts or suggestions on how to remedy this?

Play a little fetch with some scented dummies to get her back to thinking about the fun, then introduce the sound of your gun towards the end of play time while throwing the dummy. She will shake it when the fun starts.

there are some fine wire hairs out there.  They are not my favorite but don't condem the breed.  Buckmaster this is what i would do.  Take the dog to a short cut grass field, take a clip wing pigeon toss the pigeon for the dog.  Let the dog play with the bird a bit.  After about the 3rd toss fire your blank pistol.  That should fix it

Yep.  Mine took about a year to train.  He was really into retrieving so that helps.  Live birds with wings clipped will help him get excited about it as well.  First thing to do is make lots of noise while feeding them.  Bouncing balls, smacking two 2x4 together (watch out for your fingers)  Then I bought a dummy launcher.  he was scared and healed about 10 or 20 yards behind me but within a couple weeks he was right beside me and ready to hunt.  First time out he got on a bird and I smoked it.  Problem solved.

Don't worry about the not picking up,my lab wouldn't  until she was 3. She would always go find the bird but would not retrieve. Said fetch -it-up like with the training dummies, and started walking away. Turned around and dog was at my heels with bird

You'll need a buddy to help you out with this...you play around with your dog like you normally would.  Have your friend go out several hundred yards and fire a blank, then they slowly walk closer to you and your dog, firing one off as every so often as they get closer.  For your dog it will start as a 'lower' noise in the distance and will slowly increase.

Good luck

I know that is the thing lots of people say but I could not disagree more.  It is that sharp noise that gets them IMO.  Again I think dull loud sounds.... bouncing a basketball when they are eating...... when they get used to that move on to something else.  All dogs like treats... after you make a loud sound and he stays give him a treat.

I think you will have to find something your dog likes to retrieve, my youngest dog likes to retrieve a half chewed up deer antler.  my other dog like the dummy bird.  My young one will only pick up the dummy birds and bring it part way back.  She will bring the antler all the way to me so may be just finding something she likes, maybe a tennisball.

I had a dog a few years back that was hunting well until one day after a few other hunts and shots she was behind a friend when she fired at a pheasant and then my dog headed for the truck.  after that every time we got to a field she would walk in about 25 yards then turn and run back to the truck.  took her back to the house and worked with a dummy bird, got her going with that then took out the .22 hand gun and started firing that and just loving on her when she brought the bird back.  after a few days of that she was ready to hunt again.

Make your dog love birds, the wing clipped pigeon idea is great.  Let the dog play with the bird.  Get FAR away and start with 22 or starter pistol.  Repeat this often moving closer with .22 as time goes on.  The dog needs to associate the sound of gun fire with a bird that they instinctively will go crazy for. Patience here is the key, this could be a long process until you introduce a shotgun.  Taking the dog hunting and letting hear loud shotgun reports may not do anything but make this worse.  I would avoid that.  The bird association and gun fire is key. good luck

iieyes i would hunt the dog, losing a season of wild bird experience would be a mistake.  Hunt the dog and working pup on pointing, backing, and covering the field.  DON"T shoot any birds over her, then next spring use the same method i suggested to buckmaster.  Pm me if you have any questions
