.257 weatherby vs. .25-06

I'm interested in both calibers. I'd like to hear the pro's and con's of both. At this time I am not a handloader but may start in the future. I notice the 257 weatherby is making a come back as I see more and more in store gun racks. So let's hear from those of you who shoot these on performance, reecoil, ammo, etc.

Probably leaning toward a remington 700 CDL, or browning x-bolt.

25/06 is around 200 fps behind the weatherby with 120s.
BOTH are handloaders calibers... IE they are both "black sheep" in the sense that they are going to cost you an arm and a leg to run if you DON'T handload.

The .257 cal hits like a ton of bricks, and has an extremely high bs to boot, especially with the 120s.
Anything under 100 grains I would consider varmint bullets... unless your shooting a 257 Roberts.


IF you choose to handload the weatherby brass will be around 75cents to a dollar a brass... while the 2506 will be around 20-25$ a 50.

257Wby burns give or take 30% more powder to give you 200-300fps more velocity. I shoot the Wby and have only ever used 100gn bullets from Barnes (TSX) and Sierra (Game King). My handloads run 3650FPS from a 25" bbl. NXS runs the same bullets @ 3300fps from a 22" 25-06. His 25-06 is a much "handier" package, shorter, lighter, and as proven on steel out to 600yds this summer, just as capable of putting bullets into the kill zone. The 257Wby costs LOTS more to shoot, mainly due to the much higher cost of brass up front, 257Wby brass is up to about $1.25/piece. I burn an extra dime's worth of powder per shot but primers and bullets cost the same no matter what cartrige you're loading them into. If you're careful you could neck down 7mmRem mag or 264Win mag cartriges to 257Wby, you just have to keep good track of them since they won't have the appropriate headstamp.

I also have been wondering about the 2 and how hard does the 257 weatherby kick or recoil have? I have shot a 2506 and know its recoil but was wondering the same issues.

i shoot a 2506 browning abolt, i am just starting to reload with it now. bought some factory loads from federal that were loaded with TSX's. i am hooked wont shoot anythingbut those barnes now. as far as 2506 vs 257wby, when i was buying a new rifle years ago i was between those two and weighing performance and cost of the two i started leaning towards the 2506. dont regret it one bit. next for will be a 300.win mag

257Wby doesn't have a lot of recoil, but, what recoil it does have is "sharp" or "fast". Very little push, more like a quick stab and it's gone. Like nearly any other rifle if you "crawl" the stock, don't have the rifle properly shouldered and allow the rifle to basically "free-recoil", it'll come back and ding you, I had the mark to prove it during deer season. Not a cut, just a red mark for a couple days. The mark was actually from the red button on a Butler Creek scope cover release button.

I notice the Weatherby mag has a longer barrel and I have seen some .25-06 with 24" barrels as well. Briefly what is the advantage of the longer barrel? I understand completely what Horsager means by a handier rifle being a little more compact, etc.

I have a 25-06 with a 26" barrel, I debated the same thing and concluded that with the 26" barrel I would be able to be as effective as with the 257 weatherby. The recoil is mild. My 25-06 is a custom model and I can do 1/4" groups and someone shot a one hole group with 75 grain bullets in my rifle. I would say cost of shooting was my main reason for my pick. I shoot mainly 100 grain and 85 grain bullets.

Most 06 class cases only need a 20-22 in barrel to achieve optimum velocity.

On average.. 50fps per inch of barrel from 20 to 26 in.
Granted... thats average. some calibers less, some more... some it will actually slow you down, as you can already achieved maximum burn with the powder earlier.
Optimum length for a 2506, IMO, is 24 inches.
The MINIMUM length for a 257 weatherby is 24... optimum ,IMO is 26,28 inches. Primarily because of the powder amount and powder column size.

Since we are on the topic of .257 cals has anyone ever thought of build a .257 STW? I have a 7 STW and am thinking of building one in a nice carring rifle.From what I have seen it will shoot a 100gr nosler BT at 3800 to 4000 fps.

The 7 STW I have pushes a 140gr accubond at about 3600 fps. I have a muzzle break and accuracy is foninal 1/2" or less at 100yds and 1/2 MOA at 500yds.

My dad shoots a 7 STW and has been very impressed.  Don't have the stats though, need to get the equipment for that.

What load does he use?
I use 81gr of RL22 and 140gr accubonds or BT. Thinking of trying a 140 Berger VLD.

My father has a 7 STW and has been using 78 Rl22 with a sierra 140 for eons.
Chrono'd @ 3350.

i shoot 3 rifles in 25-06 and the 100 gr speer boattail item #1408 is what i use.this bullet if far superior in my guns to any others i have tried.i have a deadly accurate load should anyone like to try, just ask.257 wby is an overbore joke.thanks

You can 200fps yourself to death. The 257Roberts will run 100's to 3200fps with 10gn less powder than the 25-06 when loaded to modern rifle pressure standards. Up the ladder or down the ladder, how far does a guy go?

Scottsdale, by your logic no one should need a 22-250, it's an "overbore joke" vs. the 223. The 223 vs. 22-250 is a nearly identical comparison to the 25-06 vs. 257Wby. The 223 runs 50's out @ 3300fps from anything with 20" or more bbl and a 24"-26" will run 55's to 3700fps. Where does one draw the line?

If "it" is the 257Roberts then yes. From a 22" bbl you'll run about 62K-63K PSI to get there.
