I’m new to shooting. I’ve heard a 243 will bounce off of deer. Do I need to trade it in for something bigger?
Yes you should get rid of it. I will take it off your hands being it such a poor round to shoot at deer..
Relive your memories take a kid hunting and fishing
243 is a fine deer round but use the 90+ Gr. bullets I have seen many deer fall to it
If you have not already purchased a rifle , go to a larger caliber , you will not be sorry . I
I know a real marine shooting expert in Fargo, and I respect his opinion 100%! He claims a .243. Will always bounce off deer, UNLESS you use an 85 grain TTSX! LOL.
I've shot plenty of deer with mine. I shoot 100 gr federals no issues ever.
I have used a .243 with 100gr ammo for deer for 20 years. There's nothing wrong with that caliber. That being said, I suck at shooting and now I hunt with a 30-06 now cuz I like having more knockdown power.
Get up at 5 in the morning, walk through miles of cattails, sit in a stand all day in the cold, come back home in the dark, get up the next day and do it all over again. I'd do that for a buck!
I bet money a 58 gr vmax at 3700 ft per second will not bounce off a deer!!
Bullet didn't bounce off this one. Remington 700 243 win 1x8 twist barrel 105 Hornady bullet 1,032 yards
Yote thumper have you shot any coyotes with it? Does it tear them up? I am trying to find something that shoots out of my rifle 1 in 10 twist and doest destroy the fur. I am tired of sewing up holes.
Hornady 105 Amax will all but cut them in half, I shot one yesterday at 475 with a Hornady 105 HPBT exit was in the front shoulder about the size of a golf ball. Kind of doubtful that a 1X10 twist will stabilize a 105 grain. Had some luck with Hornady 87 Vmax but only shot a few with them, 70 grain Sierra HPBT match never tore them up but sometimes penciled through and I had to shoot them again or track for awhile. Had some good results with Nosler 90 or 95 grain ballistic tips. Most of the coyotes I shoot whit the 243 are over 400 yards as I use my 223 up to that. I stopped using Berger bullets as they penciled through and lost way to many that were hit good (saw the blood on them and they were hit solid). I'm still looking, seems like they get nasty with the hide or pencil through.
I am thinking about giving up on it and going back to 22-250 with 50 gr vmax. I can't get 100 grain bullets to group but the 75 grain hp american eagle will shoot in the same hole, but they are destructive. I have some 87grain and some 75 grain vmax I am going to try before giving up.
It will work, but only out of a Savage.
Not only that, but I doubles as a boat paddle. Actually, they suck at doing that too....
Naw, they work well as a paddle Jiffy, as long as you use blue electrical tape to tape off the muzzle and likely the trigger guard as well to reduce water turbulence! I have this pearl of wisdom from another shooting expert who also lives in Fargo! HAH! Though I dunno where he went!?! Probably too busy driving around road hunting in his favorite PRIUS!
