Why are 22 shells so hard to find.

Well it is just my theory that the supply is there but the idiots of the country continue to over pay for it so there is not a need to release the actual amount that these business's have. Cabela's, Scheels and any other vendor online or local probably want to make this as big of money maker as they can...  Also all the idiots that do buy it all up as soon as it does become available is not helping either.
What the cheapest meat? deer balls, they are under a buck.

 It's become a self-feeding firestorm.

In Dec of '12 folks saw the ammo scarcity of '08 beginning to repeat itself and said, "Not me, not this time!"  The ammo and reloading component shelves emptied in record time.  Then the distributers emptied out in record time, then the manufacturers emptied out in record time.  Now the shelves are empty everywhere and the demand is still sky-high.  There are folks lined up at every retailer when 22lr ammo does show up.  Many of them are buying what they'll shoot up relatively quickly, but, make no mistake, there are a few of them buying in the morning and selling on craigslist or similar by that same evening for 2x-4x what they paid.

Just today, a pard got an alert e-mail from Midway @ 2:30pm, by 3:15pm when he had time to go order, they were sold-out.

No regular brick-and-mortar businesses are sitting on mounds of 22lr ammo.  Not Scheels, Cabelas, Fleet Farm, Wal-Mart, Gander, Bass Pro, or any other big retailer you can think of.  None of them would be able to hold it this long in secret.  Someone would talk, steal, or sell it to a buddy.

While I haven't been to Canada to see this for myself, I'm told one can buy pretty much any 22LR ammo they want in quantity.  IMO, the "speculators" are the biggest problem with US 22lr availability, shooters preying on our own so to speak.

I received emails from Midway myself last night.  One at 2:59 am and one for another at 3:49 am.  At 6:30 am I checked both and both were sold out.  I still have a couple bricks so no big deal for me but it is still crazy out there for .22 lr.

I'm not sure why the ammo is in such short supply and have a hard time believing most stories I hear.  We went to Ontario deer hunting this fall, in the process of getting from A to B we stopped at a few places, in 2provinces, and the ammo shells were full.  We also stopped at a few at our location they were full also!  So if there is no shortage there and they carry the same name brand ammo, why is the shortage here?

availability and pricing really sux right now... if you wanna buy low you gotta read the news and be proactive... if it looks like a liberal is gonna win... you buy guns and ammo... if you think a conservative is gonna win... you buy booze and porn...

I will try this again last post failed.
Customers that would normally buy 100 to 200 rounds per year from our store are now buying five to ten times that amount "just in case ". We have a limited supply so we have resorted to putting the regular customers on a revolving waiting list and limiting sales to them. We also limit the amount on the shelf at one time to prevent the walk in hoarder. It seems to help keep everyone happy. Incidentally we have not increased our profit margin from what it was before the shortage. One advantage of small towns

At some point, arent the hoarders caught up with what they need?

ONLY .19 cents per round!

(I saw this in a Sportsman's Guide magazine recently referring to .22 LR)

The hoarders aren't the problem.  The speculative profiteers are.  Same guys who were selling AR's and magazines for @ 3x what they're worth right after Sandy Hook.

The shortage is 100% created by the guys that think they will never see .22 again.

I work in the industry. Its almost sickening as to how people justify buying it. 13 months ago nobody "needed" any .22 ammo. Heck most of the stuff that was out of the ordinary or "high end" 22 ammo was on sale. Couldn't get rid of it.

Today, everyone......EVERYONE that has ever owned a gun "NEEDS" 22 ammo. I've watched grown men lose it over why a place doesn't have 22. Its pretty sickening to watch. A guy will pick up a brick of 22 ammo, complain he can't find it anywhere and the government conspiracy and how homeland security...blah blah blah....then at the end of it tell you A) he doesn't shoot all that much....or B) he's got 8000 rounds at home.

If everyone in this country STOPPED buying every single shell they see for ONE week, there would be loads of 22 on shelves all over.

It'll come back. People will get sick of hoarding it at some point.

We're running into the same problem with ammo for our small bore league. Have had ammo on back order since last fall and our supplier has no idea when they will get any more in. Could be an interesting year.

It's getting to the point where you have to dry fire for practice and shoot live rounds for score.      The good thing is the more you pay for your shells the more you want to get out of them.

You would think they could crank out more ammo than this country could possibly want.
The manufacturers say they are going around the clock and making more than before. If that's the case, how come everyone says there is almost no ammo or there is none at all? If they make that much we should see it somewhere and more than a box or two. The wholesalers have had no rimfire ammo on their websites for a year now. Look how many packs of cigarettes are sold each day and there are plenty of them. I don't think they are producing as much ammo as they say.

But I couldn't hoard it if I wanted to. Some places have a box or two limit and not each caliber but all together.

Isell,   What about target ammo ?  I only found one site with Eley tenex but the price of that wasn't all that much higher than it was 20 years ago.

Morons. Simple answer.  I used to work with one.  Since Obama became president he turned into a nut case.  The government is going to take all our guns and ammo.  He has been piling it up ever since.  Right after the Sandy Hook tragedy he purchased 4 AR's and tons of extras because the government was going to take them.  I know he is sitting on over 20k rounds of .22LR as well, and that was nearly a year ago.

It's simply fear fueled by the ever increasing numbers of morons paranoid of us not being able to own a slingshot.....
