.223 or 22-250 for coyotes?

Thinking of possibly buying a new rifle for next years coyote hunting and wondering what would be the better caliber in others eyes?

Never shot 22-250, never needed to, my .233 works great on all yotes. Spend the extra and go with the .50 BMG, great shooting if you can carry it. HUAH

Both are great calibers, the .223 is cheaper on ammo cost, both reloaded or factory. But it is hard to argue with the success of the .22-.250, I love mine, although I have never shot a .223.

Pretty sure that you won't be able to tell the difference between the two in the field. The only place you will tell the difference is at the checkout when you are buying ammo. Most of us don't shoot enough dogs to notice a difference. But I like my .243 for the job, because it is a great all around gun, even if it does bounce off deer.

223 for 2 reasons and neither of them have to do with how well a particular caliber might perform on game.

1.  Ammo's much cheaper

2.  Cheaper ammo results in lots more shooting/practice.

Caliber is about 50x less important than ability and ability only comes through practice.

This moment is a paradox, it's the oldest you've ever been as well as the youngest you'll ever be.

The search engine on this site isn't broken and I really don't care if I'm considered cool.

While we are at it maybe we should ask if a 223 is too small for deer, or if the Game and Fish should revamp the lottery system, or if there are too many NR hunters, or if land access for hunting is getting tough, or if baiting should be outlawed, or.........

The search engine is on here for a reason, use the damn thing.

I have both. My 22-250 is set up with a bull barrel and my 223 is an AR. If the ranges are short and fast. I will go with a 223. If the range is stretched out to 300-400 its the 22-250.

Speed, thats funnier den' hell right there.  Some people just can't help being a tool. I PM'd you too.  For the most part Horsager is right on with the .223 and the 2 main reasons to shoot it...

Sweet!  At least you learned how to use it.

Hint:  Type in "coyote rifle" and you'll get 3 pages of info....maybe, just MAYBE, even some on the 22-250 and the 223.

Really Jiffy, really? I know you like to consider yourself king of fishing buddy, but relax, just because you know that a 223 is the best choice for a varmint rifle doesnt mean that someone else does, lighten up. Fishing buddy is for outdoorsmen helping outdoorsmen, not for smart a%$ comments from a tool like you. Get over yourself man, your not really that cool. I read most of your posts and comments and usually agree with you, but your attitude today was uncalled for. I know that I am younger than you, but grow up. Speed maker go with the 223, Horsager nailed it right on the head.

Speaking of "tools" there is one called a seach engine.....USE IT!!!!!  Then, just maybe then, we won't have 18 posts about the same fricken topic.  This website is the worst for that, and it's sick'ening, at other more national sites, if you ask stupid ass questions without doing a seach first you'll get smoked off the board.  Take it upon yourself to do a little research on previous topics and maybe you won't get treated like a dumbass.  It's very easily avoided...

Yes, they're built for comfort not for speed and provide warmth in the winter and shade in the summer. Oh I prefer the 22-250 and LOTS of practice

Jiffy, its easy to run your mouth a lot on a computer!  I would love to meet up somewhere and have you try to smack me in the face so I can remember.   Looking at your size and how cute you look with your tight fitting shirt with the picture of your little doe, I would love to have you really teach me a lesson.  You could bring your wife (the subject of the woman trying to become the fattest alive) for backup.  When you talk about annoying posts, if you wouldn't post such dumb responses, there wouldn't be such lengthy drawn out topics.

I don't understand why you would get frustrated.  It has been almost THREE WEEKS since the last post on the coyote/fox caliber thread that had four pages of discussion.

You guys are funny!! It's easy to tell that it's the time of year that not much is going on. Personally I like the 22-250 over the .223. More range and knock down power on those 30- 40# dogs at 300-600 yards. I don't shoot alot and when the few opportunities arise I like to have plenty of gun for the job. If you shoot thousands of rounds the .223 makes sense, but if you're like me and only put a couple boxes through it in a year I would opt for the 22-250. It ends up only being a few more bucks for a caliber that will do more.

There once was a poster named Jiffy,
his responses werent always so spiffy.
he was banned at one time,
for running his mouth.
Hence NXS was born....

(ok Im not a poet)

Seriously tho, cant we all just get along? :)

Ill weigh in on this topic, although its been covered. If you want a 22 caliber, go with the 223, if you want something faster, jump up to a 243 win, it will do everything a 22-250 will do cheaper and better.

I will agree with jiffy on this one, i opened up the post when no one had responded and didn't feel it was worth my time, this topic gets discussed constantly and just usually turns into a pissing match between the .223 fans and the 22-250 fans, then you get the 220 swift fans arguing and the .243 guys that wanna speak up.  I feel no more info can be gained here than by looking at a couple ballistic charts for each caliber.  I've been doing that since reloading data and calculators became available online.  By doing that you can find which gun suits YOU the best not everyone else.

I agree with Jiffy about using the search but he doesn't have to be such an ass about it. I used to use Nodak outdoors website alot for info and it's full of guys lying and being jerks to others. It seems like a better environment here but maybe things are going down hill.

I definitely agree with you though. This is the first time I opened the thread up, just because I've seen it 10 times a year for the last few years. I'm glad I checked it out though, pretty funny stuff.

Thanks for the laugh fellas!

Oh, and I like both, but I'd go with a 223 . But you'd know that if you used the search...hehehehe.
