i'm going to buy a new rifle for yotes and am looking at a fast flat shooting caliber.  I've read mixed reviews on the .204 for coyote sized game but just wondering what peoples experience has been with these two, especially knockdown power out to 300 yds or more.  Thanks in advance. time to call some dogs.

I shoot a 204, out to 300 with the 40 grain your ok, after that the 22-250 retains much more energy. (and before). Thing is if I am shooting a yote over 200 its because I happened to come across him, very seldom while calling. Ammo is about the same price. My daughter really likes the 204 and that was an issue. If mainly for coyotes go the 22-250. I shoot alot of prairie dogs.

I shoot a .204 with 32 grain V Max shells and love it by far my favorite gun and have never had a problem with knocking stuff down but like huntto ridesaid at 300 i rarely have that chance but i have got em that far and with no problems

Thanks for the info. so far guys.  I should clarify that most all of the coyotes i shoot are called in about 100-150 yds. but want something that has longer range capabilities.

I would go with the 22-250.Much better killing power than the 204.

What is wrong with the .223?  I shoot mine out to 600 yard without issue.  I don't think the coyote is going to care what caliber you use.

Coyotes are tough animals, if you are looking for the perfect coyote gun I think the 22-250 is it, that is coming from someone who has killed alot of them with the 204. At distance the 22-250 is unbeatable. Excluding wild cat cartridges.

If you get a 250 make sure you get a twist that will stabilize bullets in the 75 grain range, if distance is important to you!

I agree with lycanthrope. Go with a .243. I shoot one, and I love it out to 500 yards. Hornady makes the superformance round, 58 gr v-max moving 3925 out of the barrel. With a 200 yard zero, it's 13.8" low at 400 yards, 29.6" low at 500 yds, considerably less wind drift than the 22-250 also

22-250 is a better gun for longer shots. More energy for the longer shot.

If you want a great varmint gun you can shoot at a distance with almost zero recoil, go with the 22-250.  Go look at the balistics on this round vs other caliber in this class of rifle.  There are very few with equal or better balistics that are even remotely close as far as ammo cost.  You can go with a 220 swift or a 223 WSSM and get great performance, but be prepared to pay up for ammo unless you reload a lot.

Either way you can't go wrong. I have a couple of both and I too shoot a lot of Prairie dogs and I love both rounds. The 204 is a little cheaper to load if you go thru a lot of ammo. Either one will make short work of coyotes at what ever range you are comfortable shooting. My ruger 204 will hold an extra shell in the mag compared to the 22-250

Good luck with your choice and shoot a pile of yotes

+1 on the .243.  it's been a while since i looked it up.  but, i am pretty sure the drop on a good .243 round is better or similar to the 204 and the 22-250.  the wind drift is considerably less and the knockdown is much better.  ain't so sure how the brass and what not compare for reloading tho.

this is the one i use.  just deals w/ factory loads from winchester.  doesn't account for handloading or prices.  but, gives good graphics for drop and drift.  click the "view statistics chart" button to get the actual stats on drop, drift, retained energy etc...

have fun.

I run a Tikka .22-250 and a AR varminteer, like the fast follow up with the AR, but like the tikka better for walking.  As fara s round prices go the .223 isn't a whole lot cheaper then the .22-250 if your are buying factory ammo.  Had a .243 but preferred the .22-250 over any of the other calibers mentioned.

Im also in favor of a .243. I have a 243 wssm and shoot 58 grain v-maxs as well. Very fast and doesnt wreck them if you are going to sell them. Coyotes are tougher then a guy realizes. But if you are dead set on a .204 or 22-250 I would buy a 22-250 hands down
