2013 ND Governor's Cup Predictions and Results

I may have to slim down my 43 pounds prediction on winning weight I threw out there in the DWC thread.  It is sounding a little tough out there to find the quality bites.  Numbers of smaller fish but the big bites are more difficult.

Somebody always finds 10 good bites in the Cup, I would say closer to 40 even is my guess. I sure hope it's me!!

My average 5 fish limits have been around 10 To 12 pounds. I have to figure nearly double that for a tournament as being more selective wanting bigger fish and puts the winner around I'd say 38 pounds 14 ounces not including basket

"When we step into the outdoors, we have the privilege of standing in the presence of God through the power and majesty of His creation. That makes hunting more than a sport or a hobby. It's a calling to something greater. And that transforms the places that we stand into something more than a cropfield or a pasture or a mountain. It makes that place Hallowed Ground."

My prediction is me and my partner end up in the bottom half. I have fished sakakawea a grand total of 2 hours this year. Another prediction is we will have a blast in the tourney as well.

based on what I caught this weekend (first outing in two years) 43 pounds will no doubt be caught.

I have not fished the big lake this year but  based on the stable weather forecast for this week and the pictures I have saw posted on here I will go overboard and say  10 oz shy of 50 pounds.      There should be a lot of teams in the running.

Were you on east end?

And yes, out of 252 teams we will see ten to fifteen teams with mid-high 30's to low 40's. I just think very tough to get ten 20 inch fish on east end. Winners most likely will or will have a big one to kick them.  Will be a lot of 14 to 16 inch fish weighed.

Of couse some people always say their 20 inch fish are 5 pounds but those people always got em the day before the tourney....

I saw you posted a pic  a week or so ago, I can't find it now but  I should have looked closer.  I thought I was looking at  18'' - 20'' fish.    No matter what, That was a nice catch.     Ohh well, I said it and I will stick with it 49 and couple oz.      Weather will have to be right for that to happen but I always hope for a good bite on tournament day.
What is the record ?   I can remember when two guys could go out and catch 49 pounds without throwing anything back .  Ohh the Good Ol days.

If tourney was Beulah to Van Hook you could see a high 40's weight.

Those fish were van hookie fish.

I fished the east end this weekend and got taken off the water by three storms --- and yes while some biggys exist ---- and we caught some okers that would be nice tourney fish----- it was not consistent and I could not put a pattern together --- they were 2ft - to 29ft FOW.   I seen a lot of gas being burnt Saturday and the fish cleaning station was empty for the most part when we used it.

WW tactics --- use em you will win.

Stay thirsty my friends

no I wasn't on the east end.  I still think they'll find big fish over there.

Here's some fun.  Some in here had predictions much higher than what happened in 2012.  Unless a miracle happens, I have a hard time seeing anything over 43 pounds for the 2013 Gov Cup.  But there are 252 teams and someone always catches fish.  But the old year classes obviously are far and few between in the lower 1/3 right now for massive catches of them.  Most reports I am getting from people are they fight to even get a limit of quality "eaters" in the boat let-alone actual tournament fish (18 to 22 inches).  Soon enough we'll see.

Here's a good one to follow up on.  http://www.fishingbuddy.com/gov_cup_weight?app_p=2

Beulah was over shot last year.  Think it came in a pound more than the Gov Cup?  I cannot remember, would have to go look.

I think a lot of it is people think a 14 incher weighs 2 pounds.  A 16 incher weighs 3 pounds.  And a 20 incher weighs 5 pounds.  Or their ruler is off by a couple inches per fish.  Heh, heh.

Maybe someone will got on a wicked shallow bite and pop a limit of over 20's.  Maybe someone will get on a lucky consistent crank bite (and maybe even suspended bite) and pop a limit of over 20's.  But I'm thinking not.  Been wrong before though.

I am leaning toward boze and solocam.  38 to 41.5 pounds.  To be fair in guessing a weight, I'd go 21.13 lbs first day.  18.07 day two.  Total of 39.02 pounds.

I'm torn on this one and i have been thinking about it alot. Prefishing on tuesday my buddy had a basket over 22lbs with two 7lb fish in it. He left the spot alone after that searching for more areas but the next two days didn't catch anything close to that. Yes there are big fish to be had right now but there will be some luck involved for those over 20lb baskets. I think 18.8lbs will lead day one and someone will touch over 20 on day 2. I predict 39.3 lbs will win it

Went with bigger basket day one because the wind the last couple days should have allowed some cloudier water for the baiters to get a few that may be finicky.  Or maybe even the crankers by allowing them to pull up shallow and not spook fish in water that normally would be too clear.

Yeah on tuesday they had that strong NE wind and my buddy was cranking for that basket. I think the wind will help today but i'm going with day 2 for the big basket because i'm thinking the cloud cover and temp in the low 70's will get things going better than the bright skies of today...Time to wait and see!

21.53 in lead. Enzminger in first.  Helped along by a 7.2 lb fish.

Then another 20 pound basket.

Then a 19.

Then an 18.

Then a few 17's.  Last year's winners have one of the baskets above.  Anderson's another.  Crawford and Heinzen another.  Marshall another.

I was out today on east end from embankment to a bit west of Stenke. You would have swore they cancelled the tourney. Not many boats around everybody must have went west.

Nope.  Some get 20 inch fish and think they weigh 5 pounds.  Some have some good days but don't look at the long term average.  Maybe some just always get them "they day before."  Regardless, what I am seeing in weights is what I have been hearing and seeing more on my side of the lake (minus Deepwater to Van Hook).  Even Deepwater folks will say you fight to get five 20 plus inch fish in a day (consistently).  Most fish are in the 13 to 16 range east.  Up my way in New Town you can get easy limits of 15 to 18 inch fish (most times) but 20's are a little more difficult.

We just haven't turned that hump yet.  The 2003 to 2005ers took a beating and now what is left changes feeding habits when that water warms.  Plus, seems quite a bit of smelt must be deep, deep, deep or moving around in the system.  IDK, just not enough bigger fish right now to really make consistent bites at this time on the East End especially.

Here are what I have so far.  Actually worse than I thought.  Plus, not sure all weights are up.  If so, lotta zeros!

If those results are up to date there are 54 ish teams that have 5 fish out of 252.  50 pounds to win her?  Nope.  Gonna need a miracle.

Wow,  That is bad news ,   I was under the impression that the system was healthy and thriving by the pictures I have seen .     Would be nice to see G&F  hatch and release a few kazillion smelt every year and give it a jump start.
