FYI,

If anyone is thinking about stepping up,DON'T~ major issues with the new "D.E.F." emission's,I'm guessing ford is having the same problem's because they use the same stuff but no one is talking about it,in our climate here in the north country this stuff freezes below 15degrees and the trucks shut down to limp mode until you can thaw the 5gal def tank out~One would think they (engineers) would've put more thought into this.

There is no heating element on the DEF tanks snow?? That is a major oversight if they did not heat that tank.

Yeah there is,factory setting is 90 minutes, the setting can be over riden to continuous to keep the fluid from freezing while on the road, problem is/happens when you park the truck over night, once the fluid freezes solid the sensors read empty DEF tank or tells ya you have $200 miles (at 55mph) to add fluid.

Are these guys all doing SCR because it gives better fuel economy compared to EGR? It just really seems to me that in order to do SCR you will have a lot more longterm costs compared to EGR.

I'm REALLY surprised that they did not heat the tank. I remember talks about this when they were first looking at the new tier requirements and that was a big talking point, especially in our northern climate.

Yeah, the fix is to drain the DEF tank and refill.does'nt fix anything unless he parks in a heated garage,I've got a dozen of these trucks on the road, all but two are parked out doors and have issues and the def fluide is expensive.

BTW,I am a dealer~

Ford has a heated tank, and does not have a problem.  I am sure GM has put in for a Government Grant to help them understand the problem, they will reorganize and have these trucks good to go in a few months.

You moron eyexer, did you not read snow's response??? They DO have heaters but the issue is when the vehicle is off.

Do the tank heaters work if the truck is plugged in @ night?

Big trucks (Semi's) have been running Urea (DPF) for a couple years already but they've all got tank heaters and most are never shut off in the winter.

How is Dodge getting away with no DPF? Still just running diesel into the re-gen chamber and taking the mileage hit?

This failure is probably do to the Chinese owned portion of the company.

Q. How do I keep the DEF from freezing? What happens if the DEF freezes in the tank on the vehicle?

A.

During vehicle operation, SCR systems are designed to provide heating for the DEF tank and supply lines. If DEF freezes when the vehicle is shut down, start up and normal operation of the vehicle will not be inhibited. The SCR heating system is designed to quickly return the DEF to liquid form and the operation of the vehicle will not be impacted. The freezing and unthawing of DEF will not cause degradation of the product.

pness,

Just curious here, but where did you get that Q. and A?  Some genius actually wrote "The freezing and unthawing..."?

Seems to me that whenever I want something "unthawed" I put it in a freezer and it gets really cold and hard as a brick.
