Snowy Start This Fall

The fall of 2010 has had a snowy start across much of western and central North Dakota. Such a snow filled start is thanks to the atmosphere transitioning to a weather pattern that is expected during the fall and winter seasons with La Nina conditions across the eastern Pacific (click here for a detailed winter outlook). Shown below is a table for selected sites of snowfall received thus far across the area compared to the long term average for the entire fall and winter seasons. Multiple sites have already received half, if not more, of their long term snowfall average for the entire fall and winter seasons.

Thanks for posting Bdub but i'm gonna have to call milarky on some of those figures.

Bottineau already higher in 2010 than their average snowfall?

Minots average snowfall is higher than bottineaus as well? Not sure I believe that one.

Regardless, we have lots of snow and i'm enjoying the heck out of it on my snowmobile!

This is my BOOMSTICK!!!

That figure for Bismarck seems high to me to. I added up the monthly climate figures off the NWS site and it didn't seem to add up to 20 inches.

Hmm, as someone who has been stomping around the countryside trying to fill some extra deer tags, the numbers don't seem to out of whack with my own observations.

simms,
Remember, it's snow received not snow on the ground.  I just added up the Bismarck monthly climate summaries and the total in the table above is the same number.

AND, just think.  Winter doesn't even start for another few weeks.

Allen. I redid the math and you are right. I had not taken the correct numbers for December.   We do have to keep in mind that our first big blast of snow disappeared long before winter settled in.

That's why I kind of gave up on Muzzleloader season.  Don't want to get stuck.

Allen, so tell me again why we care about snow received instead of just snow on the ground? I forgot.
All I am concerned with is if I can get around to get out and fish and that my wife makes it to work!

The November 4th report did not look good concerning LaNina.  Not ending early. I think there is a monthly update which should be out soon.

Snow received versus snow on the ground?  Not much for you and I up on the hill, but low-land residents will care come this spring.  Snow received gives us our total moisture that we have to eventually get rid of through melting and flooding (or earlier through sublimation).

And of course, more snow received makes it tough in the low areas because our hills get blown clean by the wind and it eventually settles in the low-lying areas that are our access points to the ice.  Well, that and my driveway.

shorthairs,  No indication yet that the La Nina and negative Pacific Decadal Oscillation signal is going to significantly weaken during the winter.  It did last year and led to a very mild entry into spring (much moreso in the western part of the state than your neighborhood).  But in general the current combo we have is believed to create cool and wet springs making the melt come about 2-3 weeks later than normal.  Not good news at all for wildlife, flooding, or my pending cabin fever come March.

Yes folks, Allen is correct, this is total snow fall.  Not snow sitting on the ground.  Plus you must take into consideration sublimination, evap and settling.

No major systems forecast but do have a couple clippers coming that could dump some measurable precip.
