Just had to check in and see if the doomsday weather experts here are still calling for 200" snow this winter or is it 300 now?  Too funny......

I believe the 200" theory came from people who misunderstood a prediction of 200% of normal. Normal is around 40", so 200% of that is 80", a pretty reasonable prediction.

Any one that ever could have believed the 200 inch mark when they heard it already are fooled.  Dad always said, never play another man's game.

That would require twice the record snow fall ever seen by man's eye.  So yeah, that is a no and always has been.

For a refresher on the la Nina here it is.  I'm not sure if the status of her has changed or not.

Here's a more "localized" report:

ND 2011 Winter Outlook - La Nina is Back

If you don't want to read it here's one of many summaries:

Last winter’s strong La Nina became neutral in late spring. However, NINO 3.4 sea surface anomalies became negative once again late this summer (ocean waters have cooled). This signaled the onset of another La Niña. Historically, a strong wintertime La Niña event (such as the event last winter) is typically followed by a weaker La Niña event the following winter (such as this winter). Models consistently forecast La Niña to continue to strengthen during the late fall and early spring. However, the current thinking is that this La Niña event will be a weak to moderate strength event, which is weaker than last winter’s La Niña event.

The 200" mark always seemed laughable....but it is only Dec.12, don't count your chickens before they hatch...That being said we are due for a year with less snow so we can ice fish the way God intended

Actually it is 400 inches of snow this season, and it will happen guaranteed. I found it in a chain email plus the Farmer's Almanac.

So start buying bottled water and canned food and forward this on to everyone on your email list and say 10 Hail Mary's or you'll have 7 years of bad luck! Plus, you'll get a free AppleBee's coupon. I didn't believe it until I tried it but honest it works! What have you got to lose?

Don't forget that you'll get 12 phone calls from people you love if you forward it, plus Bill Gates will send you a check for $1,000, blah blah blah.

Oh and evil leprechauns will knock down your door and kill you if you don't forward it.

Or just use ice skates. Spent six hours skating all over on saturday and it worked great. You could  drill holes and get to flags in record time.

I was the one that started the thread about it but I said I heard farmers almanac predicted it and also heard that from a few people so was asking if anyone had heard that and not predicting it but what's your theory for snow fall this year since you make it sound like you are such a pro? Just sayin

Nobody is backing these claims. Not even the farmer's almanac (all 6 versions) is predicting 200 inches of snow. Nobody expect someone who started this rumor last summer. They should be tarred and feathered!

Heh heh heh, there are really six Farmer's Almanacs? I find that at least as funny as all the rumors of another flood hitting Minot in Oct and the 200 inch forecast by some dummy who doesn't even know the difference between 200" and 200'. Yep, I had at least one person ask me this year what I thought about the expectation of 200 feet of snow for ND.

Makes my head hurt.

As for predict? We have been fortunate bigger systems have skated north and south a few hundred.

I say if la Nina is still settin up we probably a shoe in for 43 inches in most areas. Including what we have had so far.

Sounds like gotta wait for january and feb.

Released the second Tuesday in September of the year prior to the year printed on its cover, The Old Farmer's Almanac has been published continuously since 1792, making it the oldest continuously published periodical in North America.

As soon as I saw all those white butterflies last summer I had a pretty good idea that we would not be getting 200'' of snow.
