.17 HMR and Coyote Hunting

I just got a Savage 93 .17 HMR for coyote hunting. How close would a coyote have to be to take it down with a .17?

I know it works on deer out to 300 yards.

from personal why would you limit yourselfwith the 17?  Very good on coyotes but hafta be close or strictly head shots.  Shot one in the chest at about 59 feet, ran off didn't even flinch.  Work great in summertime when you don.t plan on picking them up anyway, just gut shoot and let them die. Can't see that they would be much good for calling if you want to pick up your dogs and take them home at least.

i use my 17 hmr for fox, perfect round for keeping pelts.  But i wouldn't shoot a coyote with it unless i had a perfect broadside shot at 100 or less yards.  I haven't tried the 20 grain game points though just using the 17 grain v max

59ft?   My experiences have yielded different results.    Called one in for a friend and he shot it in the chest at 80yds with Hornady 17gr and it dropped it.   Another shot in the lungs ran about 150yds then tipped over.    2 for 2.   Of course range is limited and shot placement is pretty important.

I own a 17 HMR it is very fun to shoot.  Black birds at 150yds don't stand a chance on a still day.  For yotes you will be limiting yourself to about 100yds or less for being effective.  I would get a 17 Remington centerfire for an awesome yote gun that won't mess up the fur much.  That gun is just crazy what it can do with that little bullet.

i personally love the caliber, have shot a coyote at 150 yards witht the 17, but it has to be in the head or neck. I love the gun great caliber. i Recently shot a fox with it behind the ear on the run at about 80 yards and dropped him in his tracks.

100% truth was shed hunting last spring and had my girlfriend with me she saw the whole thing(there was no wind). the wind will affect the bullet. but from what i have seen it has to be blowing pretty hard. good shot placement and you love the gun out to 150 no problem

My cousin shot a .17 Remington for a while and yeah it could hammer a yote but the wind really messed with that little bullet.

honestly coyotes are tougher than raccoons imo and coons will take numerous .22 bullets and run off so a long distance shot with a .17 and expect to kill it? i really doubt it!

I'd say its a good blackbird/gopher cartridge.  Use it enough, and you'll lose a lot of yotes to it.  Not that it won't kill one, but it sure wont roll one out flat if you're aiming up their brown star.

I say to hell with that pot o' gold.

Great little round:) used it for a couple of years on yotes... Recovered 11 and had 3 runners that were never recovered... Later invested in a 22-250 and a 6-24 scope... Never lost a dog again.. I have reserved to 17 for fox, squirrel and turkey (CCI 17 gr. TNT)
If you are using the 17 for dogs, may want to restrict shot to <75yrds... Best of luck with your hunts. DL

Dont need to be a "sniper" to make a great shot.

small game, general game and habitat, furbearers.

If you plan on picking them up after shooting with the 30-06, you better have a grain shovel. Won't be much left.

Usually prime after/during deer season.

I don't skin them, but I might get into it next year. It's nice when we have cold temps and snow so you can store them, and it's nice to have a fur buyer who pays for "on the carcass" coyotes.
