I was just curious if anyone else has a new Dodge/Cummins and what kind of mileage they are getting.

I have an ongoing battle with my brother in Dodge vs. Chevy. He's been a diehard Dodge fan and I a Chevy for the past 10 years. Well we both just upgraded our pickups this year and he got the new Cummins 5.9L 325hp 610 ft. lbs of torque. I got the new Duramax 6.6L 365hp 605 ft. lbs of torque. Of course the ribbing continued until he started getting his gas bill. He's been consistently getting 12.5-13, and on a recent long trip pulling a smaller enclosed trailer (20ft) he got an average of 7.5 mpg over 1000 miles. OUCH. Has anyone else out there experience this type of performance with this truck? I've been getting on average 15.5-17.5 and have seen as high as 21 when I stay out of the throttle.

Just Curious.

BTW...he's right now working on a deal to trade the Ram for a Durmax....I WIN! :)

That's not really what I wanted to hear since I'm a MOPAR man myself.  It would be interesting to find out more because soon I'm in the market.  Probably not new because I'm busted broke but I will be looking for a used pickup probably around three or four years old.  Something to make due until I actually start making some money!  I am strongly considering diesel since the gas prices keep going up.  Rather have power and a little mileage edge if I'm going to spend three bucks for diesel vs. 2.85 for gas.  Plus, ethonal will lose it's cent tax shortly and go to 23 cents.  Gotta love taxes.

ND,

Thats GREAT!(INSERT SMILE) I keep telling folks how great the Duramx/Allison power train is,drive and compare and 9 outta 10 choose GM.Heck last week I took a F350 power stroke super crew in on trade, had to drive it back to the shop 50 miles,13mpg's and all over the road.Big difference's between the 3.

Next year Toyota and Nissan is coming after the Big 3,both will have a 1 ton pickup with a all new V-8 and they will both offer diesel motors,we'll see what happens but I'll be surprised to see an 8ft plow or a 5th wheel on these puppies.

Sounds like the older ones haven't been too bad. His brother-in-law and a couple other friends have 05's and have been getting decent mileage...around 16-17...but his '06 is really thirsty.

snow,

You best be sniffin' out a used Dura for me.  I had already decided it was a Dodge or a Dura.  Only thing is, I like the rounded fronts on the old GMCs and Chevys.  Suppose I'll have to settle with the kinked hood look though.  Weren't the '06's going to go back to the rounded front?

Ha ha, I see you were typing while I was posting.  You answered my question without even knowing it.  You truly are a genius.

Now, find me a steal on a used Dura.

Timmer's,

Let me know when ya go-on point! I'll steer ya in the right direction and keep away from the 02's and 03's,not that they were bad but unless the injectors were replaced under 100k(warrenty issue) very spendy item(internal injectors)If ya find one with the work already done by a dealer GM has extended to warrenty out to 200k,then you'll be fine.

Tim,

I should have posted this a few months ago. I just traded an '05 Duramax. I work for a division of GM and usually trade every 12-18 months, so should have a good clean '06 on the market by next winter early spring. When were you looking at moving...If sooner I'm sure snow can point you in the right direction. If at all possible I'd look for an '06 with the new 6 speed...I love mine..and the LBZ (365 hp)...definitely a noticable difference over the LLY.

You won't regret the choice.

I have an 04 cummins and my brother in law just bought an 06 and we both get 17-18 mpg on the highway if we keep it at 70-72 mph, which is about 200 rpm's. There is either something wrong with his truck or he has his foot on the floor all of the time. I get 13-15 towing a 19ft fiberglass boat.

That's what I asked him..cuz he usually is on it a little heavy. He said ever since he's gotten this one he's been trying everything to bring that mileage up, including slowing down a little bit..It hasn't really mattered much. This weekend, on his 1000 mile trip where he got about 7.5 he said he was averaging about 70....and much of that was in ND where the speed limit is 75. :) That's no fun...

You're right though..could be the luck, or the un-luck, of the draw.

Yeah, there is alot of factors in figuring mpg's,"foot-in or out" of it,tire size, tread, tire psi(to much or to little)driving terrain and such. All I know is whether its gas or diesel its time for our manufacture'ers to put their shoulder to the wheel and help us get milage outof our rigs!I read today that Exon had another record quater,4.5 billion!

I'm currently testing/driving a new 1/2crew with the flex fuel motor and like the lower cost of operation burning E-85,I change off E85 with unleaded every other fill and do not lose milage or performance, just a little extra saving's at the pump.

snow, are you sure about the E85 getting same mileage and performance? I've heard many times mileage drops significantly and your savings wont be there when the tax break disappears

Speaking of Exon having another record quarter, what are the fuel prices running around the state? #2 in Grand Forks is $2.74. I saw it in Minnesota this weekend for $2.63.

One thing that may be affecting these new diesels, is that either this model year or the 07's must conform to EPA Tier 3 Emission requirements. I know for certain on farm equipment specifically John Deere that the 2006 models have made this change and it wouldnt surprise me if the Auto industry has this year. Im not positive on this but I know for fact that by 07 they must conform to these new regs. I myself will soon be in the market for a Chev. with the flex fuel motor. My family has an 03 suburban and an 04 Silverado and we burn E85 in both. Yes there is a loss of about 3 mpg's on the ethanol, but the benefits as far as cleanliness and supporting domestic alt. fuels mean WAY more to me than 3 mpg's do. With oil closing at 70.40 today, it is time to look here at home and let the middle east and all the problems keep their own dam oil. New biodiesel and ethanol plants only mean progress for the midwest and I dont know why some people will not embrace this. As far as I'm concerned its a no-brainer and Im still a young punk that is still in college. But thats my 2 cents, Drive American!
